Raw Water Tee Off Saildrive

Hi Friends
Is it possible to share the raw water intake
on a Volvo saildrive raw water intake with a Genset, not running both at the same time?
Idea would be to put in a tee after the strainer
with an in-line ball valve coming off the tee to feed the genset, water would always flow to engine
but only to genset when valve is open and engine off.
This would prevent running engine dry if
someone forgets to turn valves.
Set up is on a cat and owner (Friend)
is concerned about existing through hull
sucking in air as p.o. told him to not run
the genset while underway for this reason
All comments welcome, especially any better ideas
Won’t be my first bad idea so let me have it
Good Bad Ugly
Cheers
Neil

Re: Raw Water Tee Off Saildrive

I'm not a professional mechanic, but my gut says it's not the best idea. Most likely not ABYC.

If both engine and genset are run, is there enough volume? If the valve is left open and genset is running, engine off, could that suck the water out of engine's heat exchanger until it gets air through the antisiphon? I mean, depending on waterline, probably not, but there are a few potential complications. How high is the strainer and therefore the valve?
