Raft Ups

With summer approaching the thought of Raft Up parties is beginning to occupy my mind. Can't wait.

Ahhh....nothing more relaxing than watching fenders squeeze out and masts sword fight with every small wake through the anchorage!

Just to add "Location" to your perspective. In the Caribbean, Our raft up parties are done in winter. The annual Christmas Cove Raft up during Christmas for instance. The Biggest Raft up I've ever seen, and I'd never do it again is White Bay on Jost Van Dyke for New Years Eve. Craziest thing I've ever seen.

Yep, true bliss until one of those flying cats go by with wind generators screaming.

Eh? Wind generators slow the flying cats down too much.

Re: Raft Ups

So does the raft up work with one boat anchored from the stern?

Yes it does. Boats tie alongside in every direction imaginable. Pure anarchy.

So once all these boats tie up side by side, then what happens?

It's not something I have ever seen down in Oz.

A party. The Boat US magazine had pictures of raft ups with hundreds of boats. Just good clean fun.

MarkJ, please stop the name calling. It's rude.

Me either. Someone needs to drop a hook off the stern of one of those boats.

Do not have access to the magazine.

I get that in a raft up you have hundreds of boats tied side by side.
It's the why would you do it that eludes me.

What do you do once you are all tied together?

It's a social gathering. Lots of drinking and story telling. The stories become more outlandish and bizarre as more alcohol is consumed. I don't drink myself.

Re: Raft Ups

Fwiw, and perhaps it's not much, my take on rafting up. Have rafted up to another boat a few times, mostly avoid it.

If you want to raft up to someone, make sure your rigs are separated, and fore and aft spring lines set so that they won't intermingle. Also, mainly only raft up to boats about your length and displacement, because if wakes come through, damage is likely.

In extremely well protected areas and settled weather, a raft up can provide an amusing venue for social interchange. Some people love 'em.

Mainly, we avoid them, because of the potential for it all going pear shaped.
