Re: pure skill or pure luck?
Yes, skill...
... and still adolescent behavior not deserving respect. He could have easily hurt others for no reason at all, beyond ego.
I'm not impressed.

Re: Pure Skill or Pure Luck?
I'd say a bit of both! Regardless of the skipper's skill, there are too many variables involved to SAFELY cut it that close. He
may
know his
boat
, he
may
know the sea, but he
WAS
lucky!

Re: pure skill or pure luck?
I couldn't agree more Boaty. Love the jockeying for position on the line just for this sort of manuvering. I enjoy anything that floats but consider the
noise
and havoc were a powerboat to do this.
Bring the skill and she will respond with ineffable grace and precision.

Re: Pure Skill or Pure Luck?
I'd say stupidity .
Doesn't take a lot of skill to turn a boat a couple of degrees.
Skill is yurning soon enough so a situation like that never happened. What if someone on the
small boat
panicked and got hurt.

Re: Pure Skill or Pure Luck?
Looks like a
race
situation. I wouldn't say it's especially unsafe. Turning to windward is quite reliable.

What is troubling is WHY; it tells something of how his mind works, that he thought there was value in it.
Any punter can spin a boat within inches of a windward mark. Agreed. I've played that
game
with marks many times, but NEVER near boats I could run over.

Re: Pure Skill or Pure Luck?
heh... racers... whatcha gonna do?
In a non competitive situation totally reprehensible, irresponsible and neglient.
But it clearly was staged. They had those HUGE bumpers and the one was pulled up outta the way and dropped in again after that turn... The person standing in the stern was very calm, the
camera
was down low for the best
camera
angle on the maneuver...
in those circumstances...
yeeeeehawwwandhowbitchinwasthat???
got me all excited just watching it...

Re: Pure Skill or Pure Luck?
Stupid? No
How about just for the shear joy of it?
I might be a bit more concerned if it was at all snotty. Should look at it again but the crew in the whaler didn't look overly concerned.

Re: Pure Skill or Pure Luck?
The markers were just being deloyed so I don't think the race had started yet.
Practice scaring young girls? Skillful boat handling less skillful decision making.

Clear Breach of Sect 43 the Transport Operations
Marine
Safety
Act if you did that in front of a
shipping
inspector in this part of the world. Skilful yes, but so is dropping a mono at 150kph in peak hour traffic on a sports bike, and you would get arrested for that.
