Who are you calling insecure? That's just plain insulting -
Excuse me now, I have to go sit at the end of the dock by myself and have a cry -

Why are there people on the internet that think every counter opinion is an insult?

Never you sir. I am totally secure in your own security. By the way my insults are usually fancy, never plain.

Why are there not more people on the internet who think? At least for a little while before posting to let the hackles die down a bit.

Re: Protocol of When to Board Another Boat?

The posted question was about a anchored boat with no one on it with an alarm going off. To me doing nothing and justifying it with things like " the owners are going to show back up and beat me up" is a BS statement being used to allow you to just ignore the issue, which is sticking your head in the sand.

I hope to never be next to such people and have a boat problem while away that could have been fixed, but instead my boat neighbors just watched.

I guess the days of the friendly cruising community I have read about are long gone!

So..what's the "protocol" for breaking into your neighbor's unoccupied house, or car? If you think you hear a smoke detector, is that grounds to break into his home?

How do you know what the alarm is? What if it's an alarm clock or kitchen timer someone forgot to reset?

Boarding a boat without permission is breaking and entering. If it's on fire that would be a justification. Making a noise that's annoying you is not.

Re: Protocol of When to Board Another Boat?

What a depressing thread.

My contact information is visible through a port. PLEASE call me if something's wrong or just pissing you off. If you want to stalk me, well have fun with that.

It'll probably be less awkward for everyone if you've stopped by to say HI! first, but in any case PLEASE come aboard my boat and try to figure out how to make the beeping stop. There's a fire extinguisher if that's the cause, my throughhulls are easy to find if fire is becoming less likely by the second, and my phone number is in the port if you just want to tell me to learn to use whatever's beeping.

Whatever the beep is, it probably doesn't necessitate calling the cops or notifying the coast guard or launching preemptive airstrikes. Sometimes people just forget to push buttons.

Am I being extremely naive here, and perhaps extremely lucky to have ended up with that mindset? Are these paranoid "security concerns" really necessary amongst the 0.01% of the population who might ever anchor a boat for the night?
