Bound to be the wrong forum but just had a look at my profile and find I have
4 (out of 5) stars and a green dot which, apparently, signifies that I am a "helpful poster"

Well - that's all jolly nice and thank-you to whoever designated me as such!!

But - How does one rate/deserve stars???

Stars come as a result of the number of posts you've made. The green dot is a reflection of the thanks you've received. Here are the numbers of posts and the star rating:

I never pay much attention to this ... seen full blown stars next to some names that ... hmmm well ... probably do little to no sailing! I thought the green dot was an indication of 'being online'

Nah - its the other green dot, I was talking about!

Wow - a thousand posts to get another star...hmmm....not necessarily sure that I want it that much!

There are, of course, other green dots in the forum and world at large.

The number of stars relates to the number of buckets onboard .

The number of green dots indicates the level of comments received on posts using the "Thanks" button. Sometimes used as a lazy way to PM the odd sarky comment .

Me has 3 green dots .

Click on your user name in the upper right hand corner where it says "Welcome impi". It will take you to your profile and you will see stars and a green dot.

? 3 green dots? I thought the "dot" in question was the green square to the right of your name in your profile. Hit "user cp" then "your profile" and look to the right of your name. Just one green square that when hovered over gives the messages listed by Dockhead above. If it reaches 2000 thanks and you need three of them you have been truly heavily thanked. I'm still at "many accolades" and have been helping out as much as possible for quite a while. Most people don't notice the "thanks" button, especially not the noobs who most often need and get help.
Is there another system of dots I don't know about? Where?

You say me having 3 green dots (of thanks) almost as if that is a surprise ........But I'll let you into my secret, the thanks button is mostly used to exchange quick comments (instead of a PM) - and those tend to get reciprocated in kind........example enroute .

It saves all that being helpful cr#p .

I see. So when you go from "many accolades" to "has been thanked many times" it jumps from one green dot to three. Just have to get up to 150 thanks. Thanks!
