Re: Production vs Custom Boats

The object of most, if not all production facilities is to drive the costs out of the process. This is usually accomplished by replacing the skilled labour with robots or by optimizing the assembly process by using modulised subassemblies reducing the worker to an installer, eliminating the need for skill. Couple this with razors edge engineering and you wind up with inexpensive and plentiful products. If this were not the case how many of us could afford the electronics and hundreds of other products we take for granted? Would you rather be standing on the shore watching the custom one off boat you could never afford or go sailing in your massed produced production boat? A mass produced boat may not be everyones cup of tea but they have allowed a lot more people to go to sea than in the past.

Well - here's a Hunter that's about to round The Horn. That's about as blue water as it gets I'd say.

I would say it is not the lat/long that tells the story but the weather one gets there.

Zodiacs have rounded the horn and kayaks too.
