Don't watch it for the sailing as there was about 10 seconds worth as it appears they motored around the whole area however the photography is quite well done and the landscape is amazing, certainly worth the time spent watching it! For a short clip, well done!

FYI an aquaintance is takin ghis 34 foot Finnsailor (motorsailor) up and around Svalbard this summer. He's been up there before in it. So GRP boats do go that far north

Now a trip like that might be a socially acceptable reason for having a "gun on board"

Actually, the norwegian authorities require a gun on board and a person with a license to use it for sailing up there.

Not to start a gun thread - but it is the only place I've ever heard of where the authorities require you to have a gun.

You have now created a flood of gun toting American sailors wanting to head to Svalbard for their summer cruising in their production or their so-called bluewater boats

Now, what anchors should they use up there?

I've heard similar stories about the Canadian authorities requiring a gun in areas of Labrador & maybe Newfoundland which are only accessible by water and have large Polar bear populations. They are very strict, however, about prohibiting handguns except in rare exceptions, and require minimum barrel lengths on long arms.

Seeing all the ice in the water in that video, I couldn't help wonder if their Bavaria was one of the older model production boats that apparently have thicker hull lay-ups. Do you guys think the newer ones that we've seen with thin hulls in the bow sections would be suitable in waters like these?

Shall I also ask about anchors or are guns & production boat hull strength enough controversy for one post?!

Thought I'd chuck this in for the 'Financially Disabled' who may be sitting looking at all these out of space priced boats that have been convinced that blue water voyaging Production Boats are out of their league check out the Alternative ARC...

Not yet... In the Torngat Mountains National Park, which comprises much of northern Labrador, firearms are still banned... Despite the attack and near death of a member of a research team up there 2 summers ago. The only people allowed to carry firearms within the park, are licensed Polar Bear Guides, or 'Monitors'...

Outside of the park, however, pretty much NOBODY ventures ANYWHERE outside of an established settlement in Labrador without a gun... And, 'enforcement' of Canada's gun laws among cruisers in Labrador appears to be pretty loosely applied, everyone I spoke to regarding the matter was surprised I was equipped with nothing more than a 25mm flare gun, and I got the impression from even the few RCMP officers I met, they simply would have looked the other way regarding long gun possession...

This lovely lady named Jenny, and her faithful four-legged companion, served as my Polar Bear Monitors during my visit ashore at Hebron...

Probably debatable which might have proven to be more of a deterrent to a bear - that puny rifle, or the pants she was wearing... :-)
