Presailing Workout

If you are getting up there in years like I am, you may want to better prepare yourself before going sailing, running, or working out.

This beginner yoga video is an excellent way to prepare your body for most any physical event:

Sounds like a good excuse not to do it... the finger pier next to your boat would work or the bow of your boat on a nice day.

It's amazing how much it helps an old body though. I ran a couple miles on the treadmill after doing the video and I'm no where near as sore as usual

But I do understand that the sedentary lifestyle is good for many cruisers and liveaboards.

It may be why they can do it where others cannot. I have noticed though that many of the folks I have known that became liveaboards did gain quite a bit of weight after a year or two living aboard

Many times before I go on my weekend or vacation "cruises" I try and get in a really long run or bike ride plus a good workout so I can handle the slower pace and relax.

I used to do a lot of yoga, but not since moving onto the boat.
Trust me, 29' doesn't provide room for yoga with the interior in - and I like having an interior.

What yoga do you manage on your boat, which is even smaller?

I do other exercise now - and since I always walk and bike everywhere, I think I'm good to go. Not owning a car does wonders for exercising

Re: Presailing Workout

I go to the gym daily when in a port with one. I do some weights and bike & treadmill.
Its quite important to do some weights as we get older.

I was forced to do a yoga class once when a cruiser needed cattle to get his daily session started. I only have 2 memories: the pain and watching the woman's butt in front of me.

Weight training also helps ward off Alzheimer's and dementia.

Everyone says cruising is great for fitness, yes it is! Lots of fit healthy people here!
As long as you do something more than being on the boat: yoga, walking, cycling, swimming, gym... its easy to do something

So far I haven't done any yoga on my boat. I do it at home before I go to the gym.

I'm a coastal cruising kinda guy so when I sail, I use my kayak as a dinghy to get to shore.

Once there, I hike for fun or with a pack to get supplies.

You not owning a car and cycling/biking everywhere is quite awesome. I hope to do the same in the future, but I may need another bike.

My present bike (a titanium Litespeed Vortex) has maybe 15,000 miles on it and it's a road bike which is not the best for getting supplies etc.

I quit sailing/racing sailboats for a while in 2005 and joined a cycling group of mostly bike racers and triathletes where we rode crazy miles...
