The main issue is that the
phone numbers can change. 2012 is "good enough". Our Lake
Ontario references consist of a "master" chart of the whole lake (CHS chart 2000) or just the half you want (for instance, the Western half is chart 2077). These I use to plot bearings. I use the Richardson's chart book to note fixes in pencil, and I use the Sailing Directions and Ports to find my way in to specific places.
Notices to Mariners should be heeded. I missed the one where St. Peter's Rock west of Cobourg went from a 25 foot fixed beacon to a small cardinal buoy. That wasted time!
