Re: Port Authority will not allow rat traps on docks?

A quick Google search for " make rat trap, make mouse trap," will lead to a number of ideas, some rather amusing. I've used the bucket type with some success, including a couple of weeks ago for a big mouse in my garage. This varmint had repeatedly defeated my store- bought snap trap. I've also caught mice and a rat or two with a deadfall trap using a "figure 4 trigger." Cost? $00.00.

" The environmental impact of farming meat is much greater than farming plants."

I would point out that the grass of high plains and mountains is difficult to harvest. The only practical way in many of the rougher areas is by grazing. One of my friends daughters wrote a paper for her masters degree to the affect that the ranches base product is grass. The problem is how to get that grass to market. A very small % of their land was flat enough or smooth enough to use equipment on it. Also there is so little rainfall that the grass grows very thin. Cows and sheep can harvest the grass and then be hauled to market. It would not be practicable to raise anything on that land that humans could eat directly. Click image for larger version

Be a fan of and a supporter of dockside feral cats.

Wondering ... aren't local seabirds liking to eat rats?

Actually, rats are too fierce for Pacific gulls, which might actually be able to kill one. Eagles could get them. Maybe ospreys.

Nope, terriers and large cats--have you seen the size the brown rats attain?--that's the ticket, and entertainment for the pets and the bloodthirsty, as well.

The vast majority of beef cattle in the US is not fed grass at all; it's a corn based feed. It's a real worry...

Can't help with the rat problem though, sorry.

Actually, I grew up in Farming Country (Hoosier). Dairy cattle are fed a fair amount of grain, and hay, and grazed. Beef cattle are largely grazed until they go to the feed lot, where they are fattened on grain.

The problem with seeking advice on a web forum is separating the BS from actual advice and separating good advice from the bad. I suspect the OP has gone elsewhere for a solution to his problem by now and knows better than to ask again.

Yep. If beef were fed corn their whole lives steaks would cost at least 4 times what they do.

You shouldnt be so 'in the box' we have a feed lot a few miles from us. I fly over it when im approaching the airport. It's huge. How huge, i have no idea bit it seems to be around 50 hectares. There are thousands of cows, raised in these outside pens eating 'grain'. What sort of grain i dont know. Apparently the Japanese buy a lot of the beef from this feed lot. Waho beef or something like that.

Now, if little Tassie has such a large feed lot, them im certain across the U.S there would be plenty of them.

I watched a doco on the environment last year. It was a show advocating the raising of food livestocks in automated feed lots because they can control methane with feed lots. Maize was definately indicated as the main staple diet for those cows. Except when they were yearlings when they were fed some sort of special starter mix.

You can not feed corn to cattle for their whole lives.... it will kill them .. corn is evil and bad.. as is Monsanto... and anything involving soy.

Grass fed cattle is OK.

Yep just like I can control my methane emissions....

You can finish cattle on corn... nothing more

Feedlots are beyond evil... possibly even worse than monsanto.. I would never ever sell cattle if I thought they were going to a feedlot.

Ping..caballero..back on the campo

And also... you can always tell if cattle being sold in the 'fats' have been finished on grain as they are shitting 50% of it undigested... they are not designed to eat it.. nor are we... but it is everywhere in our processed foods as 'corn syrup'.

Cats on a boat
rats on a boat
cows on a boat
too many of either
