I don't think it was arrogant. Hopeless, probably. Richard 5's request probably never had a chance from the beginning, because it asks way too many people to change. Few like to change; fewer still want to; and even the kind-hearted, who might understand PCCPLMC* in French, or PAPSVL* in Spanish, for instance, don't want to censor themselves any more than they already do.

Maybe mottseng's advice is actually the best to help the OP, though. It's tough, and might sound hard-hearted, AND may be the most helpful in the long run. I know a sports coach (football, baseball) who uses the phrase "suck it up" as a cue to grow beyond humiliation, and pain, and get back to doing their job. I view that ability to get past "it", and resume functioning as a good thing for people to learn.

Re: Please and Thank You

I don't feel I asked anyone to change. I simply asked that acronym or initializations are not used in place of the full spelling. Obviously there are some (NASA, RYC, as example) that are fine but I was pointing at the more esoteric in nature. I even said the magic word ('please' for you heathens).

For a few of you, rather than tell me where to get off why don't you just fuggedaboudit. I have. Those few persons made me think maybe we could arrange a mid-ocean 10 round match...in the water.

When I was teaching, this lesson was quickly learned by my 8th grade students by my introducing the concept: "Up yours". 8th graders can handle this kind of example whereas the 7th graders always giggled so loudly that the last time I used this phrase the principal's voice came over the loud speaker: "...ah Mr. Crab, please tell us what is so funny that we can hear your students in the office?"

Apparently the TRUTH wasn't wot she wanted to hear. Beware.

Thank you Ann. As stated I don't disagree with the OP, however posts, e-mails, texts etc. seem to be evolving. I believe us who resist change need to learn new ways. My rant was directed how the OP ended his post.

My apologies

You ask for our cooperation to not use acronyms. How is that not asking someone yo change?

I took a little break today from this serious computing stuff. Did I miss anything? I thought this would draw some fire from we-all-know-who. She must have been busy with the cops policia de barcos (I just made that up but it looks pretty good). Perhaps a pm to ...er... her is in order but what if a pm triggers pms?

Wot?
I'm not saying she's too old. Hell no.

Because I simply one to type the full words. You're typing any way, so why not type out the full words in the interest of clarity. I really do not understand the resistance and seeming resentment to using full words.

As I had said, many of these are obvious but I'm not talking of 'internet slang'. If one is so emotionally charged to resent my request than just forget it. If you remember, I had also mentioned how people are from various nations which implies various cultures. I guess we'll just have to gauge your response when on the receiving end of abbreviations and what not. I'm sorry to have caused so much trouble.

Our books have gotten 5 star reviews on Amazon. Several readers have written "I never thought I would go on a circumnavigation, but when I read these books, I was right there in the cockpit with Vinni and Carsten"

I also agree and choose to type out the full word in most cases however, you can't expect everyone else to do the same or even ask that they do to serve your needs. My point in all of this is do what you want to do without telling others to do it your way.

Re: Please and Thank You

IIRC, he was asking, politely. Not "telling".

Ooops!

Sorry, Richard.

True, OP was asking not telling however, the way OP was asking did not leave much doubt that it was expected. Whether is was polite or not is subjective.

As stated earlier, I agree with the OP and by the way what does IIRC stand for?
