The modern piracy off Somalia started off with good intentions. After the collapse of the Somali government, western nations started dumping toxic waste off their coast, this led to a volunteer coast guard to turn the tide (pun intended). Unfortunately this rapidly evolved into the piracy as an industry we see today.

What has happened in Somalia could happen to any country, including ours once a government has collapsed. When the laws vanish, people show just how thin the veneer of civilized behaviour really is. Look at the direction of this thread has taken, piracy half way around the world and there is a ground swell to have a few lynch parties formed. We have a rule of law for a reason and must not deviate from it no matter how slow or clumsy it may be.

Well, its not as if the pirates were executed. When the Korean soldiers boarded the ship, they were fired upon. So they fired back and 8 of the 13 pirates were killed in the firefight. It would be a bit uncivilized to kill them if they had surrendered, but it doesn't sound like that is the story here.

Ultimately the British using the royal navy eventually stoped the Barbary pirates. Read the history a little more closely

That may be a little bit true, but I wonder if it's more or less propoganda to justify a crime. Al Jazeera agrees with the idea.

There may be poor in Somalia but there is arguabley no country, no government and certainly no rule of law. This needs to be addressed but just as surely, aid should not be delivered in the form of ransom. This is nothing more than insurance payment to the mob.

This seems to be degenerating into a debate on capital punishment. I'm all for it, as I don't like paying for the feeding, clothing and housing 'til- death-do-us-part, of murderers and pirates. But I'm interested in sailing, not the vagaries of capital punishment, so I'll see you on other threads.

What I dont understand is that they know which ship is the mother ship that transports these pirates. So why not take out the mother ship and the problem will be solved. The small boats cannot make it back to land and if there is no mother ship to go back to, they cant get back to do this again. The Russians have it right.

Absolute nonsense!!!! The people who are committing piracy in Somalia are NOT on the verge of starvation. Those active in piracy are living the life of luxury. Piracy is the best paying livelihood in Somalia. Others might be on the verge of starvation in Somalia, but not those working as pirates.

It is surprising how many excuses are made for Somalia and its pirates !!!

Somali pirates have been active in the North Indian Ocean as early as 1,200 AD. As far East as the West Coast of India - they used the present day Maldives as a base for two hundred years, from which to launch their attacks.

From the 13th century until the present day except for short periods in their history, Somalis have been PIRATES --- The reason has absolutely nothing to do with other people fishing off the coast of Africa.
Apart from a couple of countries the rest of Africa is also plagued by one form of internal strife or another.
