Re: Pirate attack Phillipines ?

As bad as this is, it is not a "pirate attack." That would be a hijacking, abduction or robbery AT SEA. Terminology is important here. These are thugs who hit a resort that just happened to be a marina.

Yes I agree, but yacht owners will be probably more and more subject to this abductions by extremists looking for money or wanting to spread terror.

If they have a yacht, they are rich "by local parameters" and therefore good targets and if they can do it on a marina they can do it much more easily on anchorages.

A sad world where safety is compromised in many places and also a sad world that created the conditions for the spread and increase of this kind of extremists.

Re: Pirate attack Phillipines ?

Just finished watching some of the old SV Delos videos of when they stayed in Oceanview. Looks to be a very nice place. Are there any reports/updates on how Oceanview Marina is doing or how they have responded to this terrible tragedy? Have they improved their security? Are there any boats left in the marina?

Re: Pirate attack Phillipines ?

Why would you even think about going there? Did you see the video of John Risdel being beheaded. Yes there are armed guards at the Marina but I had good reason not to trust them. What kind of Government stands back and allows this to happen.
I think it is blatantly obvious it is not a safe place for yachts to go until these animals are eradicated.

Hi , I Can only tell you what ive heard from friends that were there upto recently. Security at the marina has been majorily improved. Watch towers with heavily armed guards have been built. Yes, boats have been there ever since. I'm not sure how true this is but was told after the kiddnapping alot of the boats ended up having a gun on board.
In reality it is most likely very safe, its a Christian island, the kidnappers had come from some distance away, they weren't local. There are several hundred expats that live on the island. That being said, I most likely wouldn't go back, which is a real pity a I enjoyed my time at Samal.

Re: Pirate attack Phillipines ?

Daletournier thank you for your comments about the area. I was really looking forward to seeing the Philippines one day. But I fear these things just seem to get worse, not better. So by the time we set off for that area of the world, who knows?
But most importantly I just feel so sad to hear about this tragic ending to a nightmare situation. I can barely think about it, it makes me sad to live in a world with these types of problems.
I wish peace to Johns friends and family.

I think Chicago has had 141 murders in the first 3 months of 2016, but no one is fleeing Chicago.
Not saying Philippines is safe, but one needs to keep things in perspective

Well, I dunno about that perspective, mate! I fled Chicago nearly 60 years ago, and there are neighborhoods there where nearly everyone has indeed fled. My sister still lives there and I worry about her. Did visit last year, and there were some pretty scary areas... But, as in the Philippines, there are some nice areas, too.

What a world...

Gosh, that's a hard one to answer, for we have felt pretty secure nearly everywhere in the pacific. Exceptions were in Honiara shortly before the troubles there exploded... just generally bad vibes, groups of young men standing about giving us the stink eye, that sort of thing. We have avoided some specific areas due to being warned in advance... for instance, some unrest in Ouvea caused us to avoid that island last year, perhaps without due cause.

If I had to answer, I guess NZ would be high on the list (although it has been a while since our last visit there), equally Australia, although I'm sure there are neighborhoods in Sydney where I'd be pretty cautious! PErhaps we are overconfident, I dunno, but we've been treated so well wherever we've gone that it is hard to be paranoid.

Not a good answer to your question, I fear, but an honest one!

Jim

Perspective.......it often gets lost, lets look at the murder rate of south africa, yet people cruise that way every year. People forget the Philippines is quite large and a majority of it is quite safe, would I go to palawan again? Definately.
The most unsafe I felt was in Belize, and I have certainly felt more aggression in the carribean than Asia.

Risks, in Chicago, are not evenly distributed. Just like everywhere else.
In Chicago, if you're not associated with a criminal gang, or involved the trade of illegal drugs, your risk of being victimized are pretty low.

Just like everywhere else.
