I had a vanguard for several years. I loved her. Seemed really well built, too. I'm a big fan of Phil Rhodes, that's why for my next boat I basically got a bigger vanguard, the Rhodes Reliant.
Some folks have had some deck core
problems, like all boats of that vintage where owners improperly installed hardware
, some folks have replaced the mast
step that bridges between the two bulkheads that take the mast compression
She's a pretty slow boat with tiny waterline length (22'?) and waaaaaay less creature comforts possible in the tiny cabin
than a more modern boat, but she's a lot of fun to sail. Very very tender
at first but once she hunkers down to 20 degrees of heel she feels pretty stiff. We had lots of fun w/ her in Narragansett Bay.
Aesthetically I'm not super into the large cabin
trunk and giant windows.
