Part time bareboat captain opportunities?

A year from now I will be retired and would like to high season in the USVI/BVI as a part time bareboat captain. I hold a USCG six pack and inland masters with sail. I have tried calling Bareboat companies to ask questions and cannot get past the Florida based charter intake operators. Also wondering where I would locate myself when not on a charter. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I would be doing this mostly for the sailing opportunities rather than for the money.

Re: Part time bareboat captain opportunities?

Perhaps I am dense, but what is a "bareboat captain"? A bareboat charter usually means that there is no "captain" involved. Perhaps you are talking about skippering on crewed charters, I dunno... but there are lots of folks with 6-pack tickets who would like to sail around in the Caribe and get paid for it. Might be a hard sell!

Re: Part time bareboat captain opportunities?

Thanks for the replies folks. Many folks who charter a bareboat will hire a captain for the week or maybe for just the first day or two. Probably also hire a cook sometimes. And so one problem is where to locate myself. Maybe buy a modest place or rent for a few months. And then there is the need to sail. Being a part-time captain for bareboat charters might be nice, or maybe I will have to buy a boat, or rent a boat for two or three months. I am really just looking to escape winter in New England for January February and March

Re: Part time bareboat captain opportunities?

A Captain is usually hired because of local knowledge and experience. Do you offer either?
Perhaps you would be better of looking to crew on a larger yacht.

Excuse YOU for not being crystal clear in your post. Your best bet is to crew down to the Islands and hang out. You never know what opportunities will float by. At least you'll be on the scene. Best of luck.

Re: Part time bareboat captain opportunities?

I did this years ago in USVI. I worked at the tour boat dock at the Frenchman's Reef hotel while studying for the license. Once I passed the test, I was on their list of skippers they could call for half and full day sails. When all of their boats were working, the skippers could use their own boats and make more money. So, if that is still viable today, you would want to have relationships with the people at the tours desk at as many resorts as possible.

I have a bit of knowledge and experience in the area but could use more. I guess what I am really looking for is the chance to spend a couple of months down there during high season do some sailing and not be doing it for the money. Not sure I want to invest in a boat and leave it down there

Also, learn to cook. Can't hurt!

Hi Jay,
I might have a dandy opportunity for you.
This winter I will be living on my cat for several months, and will be offering charter trips, crewed. While I am competent to sail people around the VIs, I was thinking about having a skipper so I can do the work on trip planning, marketing, hostessing, cheffing, drink pouring, and such.
Will you be in the islands this season?

Please let us know if this deal works out. I love that the OP put a request out there and lightening may have struck. Just shows what a positive attitude and communication can do for you. Good luck.

Re: Part time bareboat captain opportunities?

BVI reqires its' own type of Masters License(USCG 100T and of course, $ to take their test) but your 6-Pack is a 12-Pack in the USVI (youre allowed up to 12 pax). Each season we have loads of (mostly young) guys (and some girls) come down w/o license and go thru Captain School USVI and get jobs. Some stay. You'll need a good sense on humor, a thick skin and plenty of sun-screen.

I am selling my contracting business in the spring. I have to keep working it until then. However, I am able to take a week or two, come down island, to look at possibilities for the followIng winter season. This does sound like the type of opportunity I might be very interested in. We should talk more. Email or text would be easiest. My cell is 413-214-2414 Email jrtboland@gmail.com. Should also mention that I have a PADI Divemaster rating, 30 years diving experience, over 1200 dives, mostly in Caribbean
25 years as tall ship volunteer, part-time crew. Also perform Sea Music.
