Oz to BVI by air

Hello all,
we have been asked to join friends at Tortolla in the British Virgin Airlines as extra crew when they cross from the BVIs to America (Portsmouth) in conjunction with one of the ARC Rallies in May 2017. They have just completed the Atlantic ARC rally.
While we have spoken to our travel agent to start arranging the trip we are being told its not a very straight forward flight from Sydney Australia to Tortolla with several change of flights taking a few days.
Among the collected experience on CF is anyone able to shed light on what routes may be available to us. We have heard through the grapevine that a route is available through Britian but we cannot source any information on this.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Australia to a major hub in the US, then Puerto Rico, then BVI.

From the Qantas site.... to San Juan... looks simple enough to me. One overnight in San Juan is all....

Most travel agents are hopeless if you want something out of the ordinary...
