Other ways to check on documentation process?

We bought a boat which was USCG documented. The broker sent in the forms to USCG for the sale of the boat. I filled out the transfer of documentation form (not quite called that, but you understand) and mailed it on 3 October; the check was cashed about a week later. When I go to the USCG Documentation site, the listing appears to be nonsense; it has references to fishing registration and other junk.

What other means are there to check on the status of the documentation?

Call them, I've always had them return calls promptly and be very responsive.

they are very understaffed and very backed up. It took me 5 months to get my documentation. However, if you are about to leave the country and you really need it they will expedite. I also found them to be quite helpful. Not fast unless you really need it but no runarounds either.

Re: Other ways to check on documentation process?

For 2 years running VDC has screwed up renewal of my certificate, which should be an easy, automatic task. I wouldn't rely on anything I might find in their database -- for my own vessel, I know there are erroneous and duplicate certificates entered.

My documentation change took 4 months.

If you are searching by name you may find many boats listed. There are twenty plus boats named Blind Faith, for instance.

Patience is a virtue. Phone calls are cheap.

Thanks for perspective. I mailed in the forms for our new (to us) boat on 9/27. Previously undocumented, we moved her from VA to GA. The check was cashed a week later. Still no CG response. I'll be patient.

Re: Other ways to check on documentation process?

When I called the recording said to go to their website to check. When I did, it didn't make any sense. I emailed the webmaster and got a useful reply. My paperwork was received on October 6, but they are only up to processing forms received on August 9. Might be a while.....
