Organizing Deep Chest Fridge and Freezer

Has anyone figured out a way to make good use of the space in the big chest-type fridges and freezers?

We are just starting to really use ours, and could use some suggestions. We have a little shelf, but things would roll off it when heeling. And the bottomof the fridge llooks like it will have a small puddle most of the time. (The drain pump doesn't get all the water.) Maybe that's the place to keep cans of beer.

I'm thinking about getting some baskets with cords attached, so we could pull up the baskets from below.

So how do you pack your fridge?

Make several smaller boxes out of plastic that can be lifted out easily, and seperate according to your needs.......i2f

Tupperware, finding the right sizes isn't easy but when you get them, keep them.

We too have a deep, deep fridge. Our's has two sliding shelves. The bottom is clear lexan to be able to see what's below. You might try adding fiddles to the shelves to keep things from rolling off.

The tupperware idea works great but I lucked out and found little miniature plastic milk crates at Wallmart. Each is about 10 in square, they stack and lets lot of air circulate.

The one other thing that helps prevent fridge diving with both feet in the air and head deep in the fridge is an extension handle. The following shows one from Amazon.com but I bought mine at Lowe's. Look around but they come in all prices and all qualities. Just the thing to grab something from the bottom of the fridge and we find that we can use one to hold a rag or sponge when it's time to clean the fridge.

Good suggestion, Rich. I had a similar "grabber" and it came in handy for all sorts of stuff, including holding wipes to clean up oil in the engine bilges after an oil change.

I also second the idea of using smallish plastic tubs without tops. If you get the right size you can stack them crosswise and have two layers. They allow you to segregate the contents into like items so you can minimize the time the top is open.

Thanks for the ideas about stackable containers. That should work.

Re: Organizing Deep Chest Fridge and Freezer

I use plastic stackable baskets that are designed as in-trays for kids. They have plastic rods to separate them, but I never use them, just put heavy things (soft drinks) in the bottom basket, Tupperware on the second basket, and soft things like cheese and salad on the top basket. Then of course, I put a few softies down the small gap at the side so I don't have to lift the top and middle baskets out every time I get thirsty! There's also space down the side for milk bottles with frozen water in them, which helps keep fridge colder.

Saucy,

Do you have a picture of your storage system? It seems ideal!
