One month Sailing the Italian Coast- Where would you Go?

Hello all,

Have done some searches on here for this but I was wondering..

If you only had a month to see the best of the Italian coastline (west coast) from Naples southwards what would be your must see places.

Any tips on great towns, anchorages, etc, would be most welcomed.

Açciaroli, Camerota and possibly all other ports in the north of gulf of Pollicastro. Maratea is no joy and some of the southern ports are very missable. Below Salerno is very pleasant cruising and you might even get a wind in your favour.

Hi Simon,

The Bay of Naples and the surrounding Islands are all very beautiful. One month would cover a lot of ground. From Naples I would sail West to Isola d Ischia. A good anchorage here to the south of Castello d'Ischia. Leave the yacht anchored , whistle up the local taxi for a ride to shore for 3 Euro and explore the old Castle.
From there a quick crossing to Procida, anchor in Corricella , dingy to shore for a look around and an overnight.
Next day either head west again for the Pontine Islands.
Pontine Islands, anchor outside the old Roman Galley Port of Ventotene . Check out the Port said to have been dug from the rock way back when Caesar was a boy. Worthwhile noting the old bollards carved out of rock and the store sheds, rock caves still being used today. From there to Ponza. Lots of anchorages on the East Coast of Ponza to hide from the prevailing NW. Crystal clear waters and incredible rock formations. Spend two days here just soaking it up, moving each night for an ever better surround.
If you are intending to just relax, enjoy a swim and generally wind down, this is a good spot to do so. You may easily spend a week here puddle jumping anchorages around the Islands.
Ok you can spend more time on some of the other Islands around but I would then head for Capri.
Another two ti three days here. You can anchor outside the Main harbour (Marina Grand) in calm weather, if a NW blowing hide around the S side. Plenty of good spots to anchor here. It is a quick and cheap bus ride to look around the Island from here.
You may wish to call into Sorrento , again anchor outside the harbour if the weather is ok, the Harbour here cost us 150 Euro(40''Leopard Cat) to hide from a Gale coming througfh. A good place to hire a car and have a look around.
I would probably move on from here, sail around to the Amalfi Coast with our first stop Positano. We were quoted 100 and 130 Euros for a mooring Buoy here (for a cat), we anchored without a problem, good holding to the East of the mooring buoys.
Positano is well worth a look around.
Next day anchor outside Amalfi . Another beautiful old city to walk around.Walk inland in a northerly direction through the old toen. Follow the valley North, it will lead you up and into a forrest walk with waterfalls and swimming holes. Magic on a hot day.
You could spend some more time in a few sheltered bays around here, they are all very pretty.
Perhaps head for Salerno. Again anchor to the East side of the commercial port in the bay between the two Marinas. Good protection here from NW wind. Here and Sorrento are good places to leave the yacht for a look at Pompei!

You may prefer to do this in reverse. The best swimming and cleanest water is around the Pontine Islands.

gday Simon, you probably saw our blog posts on that coast. Agee ishia is a great anchorage and nice town for a couple of days. Free berthing at Ventotine against the wall in the new harbour (no power or water, but a local guy that likes to help you tie up, ask for a beer and creep out the women on board). Really nice town (eat at the restaurant up the hill, great food!) but Ventotine isnt South. South of Ishia, sail past Capri for a lunch stop, Anchor off Nerano if its Northerly, head to Acciaroli, another nice little town, free marina for 2 nights if you dont need power/water. Out to see Stromboli erupt at night and onward. If you want to skip Stromboli and continue along the Italian coast Ive heard its quite nice and not very busy as most yachts are heading around that area. Agree with all of Denys' excellent advice

Yes Balearics are the most expensive. Most marinas on the Italian Coast were under 60 euro per night for us although we rarely did marinas, tons of anchorages to go to.

I'm anchored (with a v slow connection too) just off Procida having sailed up through Messina over last two weeks.

My own view of this coast - hopelessly crowded anchorages, nor especially clean water, rather expensive marinas (50 -150 euro a night) and overall, nothing special.

We are now passage makin ASAP out of Italy.

If you have a month, my advice - two days passage to Greece - kefalonia or thereabouts. Beats this coast by a country mile.

Hello all,

So we're getting close to trying to book marinas for Naples. Has anyone been into this area of late? Looks like a lot of new marinas going up but not sure any of them are finished. The others look packed.

Any ideas of where to go? We're be there in two weeks. So are looking to book now if we can as it seems to get very busy around this bay.

We took the train despite being quite far away in Agropoli. Two days on the public quay free there too - immeditely on right as you enter port about 30 m in

One of the cafes near port sorted tuk tuk ride to station 6 e Theres a taxi rank there for getting back


Train is frequent, direct and comfy. We were too late to buy ticket outbound and noone else seemed to bother either

fare was 6.50e (o w)

Naples is properly rough. Be v careful with valuables

I still recommend you skip italy especially Amalfi in August. Overcrowded, tempers fraying and almost no alternate anchorages....money, money, money

Kefalonia - fabulous anchorages, clean seas, still a welcome even if you dont have 300e a night to moor!

I hear ya but we're meeting family in the area end if Aug. We are only there for a week and then we'll hotfoot it out.
