At least this thread's title aptly describes the discussion.

Oh and its usually in the 10% that will kill you
OK, well, touché. I'll be heading down to a library when I have some spare time and checking those. If there is indeed some sort of figure involving the immune system's effectiveness and the figure 90% then I may well have to deliver the aforementioned carrot. I'm not totally sure what the 90% would refer to though, but we'll have to see what sticks. Hope you're in the UK at the moment if you're right because I don't collect airmiles so this could get pricey. I'm not too worried though, because the figure sounds pretty made up to me... 90% of what? Number of pathogens entering the body? (you would be dead pretty quickly on that 10%). 90% of know strains of pathogen? I don't really want to spend too much time trawling through medical textbooks so take this as you're official bluff-calling. If you're a medico then come back at me, if not, well, own up now please and save me the time!

I am a medic.
To cut through the bull...... the body is in a continuous state of protection against virus and bacterial infection. Its a fabulous mechanism. If the immune system has not been weakened or compromised it will deal with nearly everything except infection it has no experience of or which do not have resemblance to something it has dealt with previously. (It can be overwhelmed with a continuous assault)
It does NOT mean a person will not get infected with something, it means it GENERALLy can deal with it.
If it cant, then you either screwed or have a long stay in a facility somewhere..

My references demonstrate how the system works and if you calculate blah blah blah........ you will see how i arrived at my figures.

PS...... I agree with your scepticism.. I dont like internet posted 'facts' either.

I see... I may have got myself in a spot of bother here.

So what exactly did you mean by the figure of 90%? Just so I can follow through your 'calculation'.

Postulating the theory that virus and bacteria exist ALL the time. It can only be a compromised or weakened immune system that allows it to become 'activated'.
Based on this, we are surrounded daily and constantly. A dis-ease can only occur on or in a host. If you add up EVERYTHING from colds to infections to this or that........ it becomes 100%.
The body fights 100% of the time, but given that a weakness in the immune system via genetics or an accident might have occurred, or that a course of medical treatment has depleted the immune system, I forget the exact mathematical table I used, (it was 3 years ago) it was roughly about 90% immunity on an everyday level against all local infections in an individuals habitat.
Now flying in an aircraft can screw with that...... low recycled pressurised air and people from another culture and germ pool.
So I do concede that my 90% figure could be 85% or 91%.
so you win and I dont need a carrot anyway..........

Well, no, I thought your number was a total fabrication so I would settle for 85% quite happily! Which of the references should I look in first for the table you used? Not being a medic myself I may need a bit of help here.

Kudos to you sir, I really didn't expect things to pan out this way. Hope you live close or you may have called me out on the carrot promise.

I will be in Mallorca sometime after July or August. I will locate the data I have on file there. The articles I have submitted for your perusal show how the immune response works and extrapolation needs to be done in sync with other information.. If you dont sucumb to an illness between now and then, we can discuss it later..........

Re: OMG. What's the Point?

And Im going to come out of the closet COMPLETELY.
I have done:
The Nile
European Cruises including France and Germany
and 2 proper Canal cruises in the UK

Also a few 3 day cruises from Florida.

I prefered the river cruises.

Yep it is. Built for the Navy for a dual mission, hence it didn't do either very well so we got it. Medium speed diesels that destroyed themselves trying to produce rated hp. After rebuild they were run at a lower rpm and de-rated hp for longevity.
