The question I have is do you really need to be on a ship?
Are there not mega hotels on land that provide the same amenities?
I guess it would cost more since these cruiselines don't have to meet employment standards for their workers like on land?

We passed through a hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean on the below-pictured ship (maiden voyage) with quartering waves hitting the sixth deck. No damage other than things falling off shelves and tables (such as a bowl of cereal in my lap). Also no expensive real estate (and you know how costly that is since 30 minutes ago Sacramento just approved the Arena deal), plus foreign flagged so you can have cheap crew, engineers and deck officers.

I know people who love cruises. I remember when I was young, my mother and aunts went on a cruise and loved it.

However, my wife and I have no desire whatsoever to go on one. And frankly, I'll admit to being a bit scared of them. Scared of the illness, both contagious and food borne. Scared of the systems failures that have led to unbearable heat, no sewage disposal, and other problems. And most scared of the fact that when one of these things happens, the cruise line picks the least costly way of addressing it rather than considering passengers at all. I think that may be my greatest fear, perhaps a form of claustrophobia, of a problem developing and being locked in with all the others and no way to escape. Sure, systems can fail on my boat, we can get sick. But I don't have to deal with the waste of thousands of others (my own waste is one thing, but that of others, no thanks) and I don't have to worry about what is going on in the kitchen or who among these thousands of passengers has some horrible contagious condition that is going to hit us all.

Not saying my fears are rational. But I'll stick to my own boats and leave cruise ships to others.

Weavis, your video supports my view that one can travel in relative comfort in a storm at sea on a ship. Imagine the comparative conditions on our recreational boats.
