Old Sails... new life as tote bags

I have several rather large old sails... which are a but "bagged out" but the clothe is OK.... for re purposing. I could: Make a anchoring riding sail.... or have someone cut them up and create tote bags... I don't really want to make this a business (for me) but it would / could be maybe good for someone else. Are old dacron sail clothe tote bags an OK idea? If so does anyone have a suggestion how to make that happen? I can't see throwing these sails in the dumpster.

There are several stores on-like that do this. With strict rules.

I went to a local canvas person and got a HUUUGE bag that can be used to launch my code zero or a gear bag when I crew on long deliveries. Same deal--- one used main sail for one bag.

You could also make sun/rain covers, drough, warp, collapsible water bucket, winch covers, etc.

Not good enough to sell 2nd hand on line, but you'd prefer to recycle them somehow.....how about donating them to a kids' sailing program to be cut down for little dinghy sails? or shades for yards? There is a group somewhere on the East coast of the US who collects them and sends them somewhere in the Caribbean where islanders make them into "stuff." Good luck with your search.
