not a pleasant place to anchor

Today in S.E Queensland we have an interesting stormy day, thunder, lightning and good squalls rolling past.

So for a laugh we go to our local surf beach (Coolum) to check out some wild weather and to my surprise i see a 40ft FP? anchored just past the breakers !

We did some stuff and they were still there 20 minutes later then motored off in the direction of Mooloolaba (all weather safe harbour <10nm).

Stopping for lunch at the surf club? Decided it would be easier to enact repairs where the swell was taller? Doing their washing?

(sorry about photo quality, phone was all i had)

If they got the hail that came through they would have been deafened.

I forgot to add they were inside the shark nets so appeared to be heading off hugging the coast a few 100m offshore to get to mooloolaba.

Thats too close for my liking, especially in such poor vis. Then again not all FP owners are known for seamanship. Usually big wallets, but not seamanship

Re: not a pleasant place to anchor

We swim there all the time, it's about 9ft deep where they are with (today) a small 4ft swell. Its inside the surfboard exclusion zone in a patrolled swimming area except there wasn't anyone crazy enough to be in the water !

Today there were some amazingly scary cloud formations, it went from midday to dusk in 15 minutes. Did they get frightened and head for shore?

...or if they had mechanical problems, fouled props etc, maybe they got the hook to bite just before they hit the beach.
