No Name Harbor and Bimini Crossing

Hi All,

Planning on sailing down to No Name Harbor on Key Biscayne on Tuesday or Wednesday, anyone know how busy things are down there? Is there space for a 46ft boat to anchor overnight, or will I need to find somewhere else to wait before crossing to Bimini. Forecast is looking OK for a crossing on Wednesday or Thursday, although we may have to motorsail as the winds are supposed to be from the east and fairly light, but the seas should be nice.

Anyone else planning on crossing to Bimini this week?

There is always room just outside of No Name southwest of the entrance. Anchoring inside is not worth it in my opinion, too many boats, too many people who don't know how or where to anchor, and too little room, especially if the wind shifts. Outside is protected in an easterly or northerly wind. Passing sport fishers may wake you a little in the morning and afternoon, but it's a lot quieter and less crowded than inside.

You can always anchor at Nixon's Harbor which is just a bit north.

Just checked Passageweather. 15 kts from the east, not pleasant to motor into. But wed thurs is too far to know for sure. The best thing is to be ready, all fueled and watered up and everything battened down, check every day and go if it looks good for eight or ten hours. I'd wait for a cold front and when it goes south and west, take off and keep going till you get to Nassau or it'll go to the east and you'll have a tough slog on the Bank.

Off Nixons is a good place to anchor and wait for weather. No Name is too crowded and turns into a zoo.

The last four times I staged at No Name, it was so full of boats that I just anchored outside of it. Another way to do it for longer waits is to take a mooring at Dinner Key, then slide over to No Name when the weather is starting to look right for a crossing.

Maybe stage further south in Angelfish Creek. There is a horseshoe shaped channel on the north side of Angelfish that we have anchored in several times making this crossing and when the winds are east . It is a better angle and a little push from the stream doesn't hurt.

Went to No Name twice this year....4 boats anchored the 1 st time....9 the next....you just never know .... weekends a zoo for sure....agree anchoring outside a good alternative

Try giving the restaurant a call and ask them how many boats are there.

There are a few public marina's if you are planning a lot of time for a good window... you are only an hour or so motoring from Dinner Key or Key Biscayne to the beginning of the channel. Wait untill you get a good forecast then perhaps stage outside No Name... shoot out once you have enough light.

You can tie up in Boca chita island, Biscayne bay. no one there during the week. Beautiful docks and you can stretch your legs waiting for your weather window.Ill be spending a few days there this week sanding and varnishing .Just stay in the marked channels.

Once you get to no name, you are also close to nixons and dinner key.
No name will be crowed with people on the weekends and any holiday. But if you have an easterly you can always pop over to nixons. And dinner key is right at Coconut Grove if you like to go ashore.

Just outside no name is ok depending on the wind direction.

I suspect you'll find a few boats "heading for Bahamas Wednesday after the weather breaks.."
