Re: New Florida Anchoring Amendment!
The bill was not voted on yesterday by the full senate, just the one committee. Fingers crossed they don't get to it.

Re: New Florida Anchoring Amendment!
And again, the anchoring law does not sunset this year. Just the stupid pilot program. Which was clearly a waste of time as after 5 years of "study" they have NADA.

Re: New Florida Anchoring Amendment!
Oh, and if your tolerance for pure and utter BS is very high, you can actually see the debate regarding this by the Florida Senate Appropriations committee.
I just watched it online. For the most part, our representatives are fossils.
Margolis showed her views on this very plainly, by complaining that boats anchored near waterfront properties were essentially a nuisance, and she wanted local municipalities to be able to regulate this. She further showed that she had no idea why anyone would support those boats.
She withdrew her amendment only because the chairman said that he would postpone the vote on the bill if she amended it, as there would be some public debate on the issue. He also said she could amend it later, so she withdrew it.
We should keep an eye on this, as these guys move pretty quickly, and the representative who proposed 1126 didn't seem to grasp whether the Margolis amendment was part of what he was proposing or not. The chairman seemed more familiar with it than the guy proposing it!

I would encourage cruisers to contact their representatives and make sure they know where you stand.

Re: New Florida Anchoring Amendment!
OK, HB955 was passed 'Clean' after the Margolis/Gonzales Amendment was defeated in the house 67 Nay to 50 Yea. BZ to BoatUS, SSCA, and NMMA who lobbied hard for a clean bill and all who wrote/called their representatives. I watched all of the debate and contrary to what some believe it was clear, contrary to what some have said here, that it is well understood that the State limitation on anchoring restrictions and the pilot mooring program are coterminous; indeed that was the argument used by Rep Gonzales in support of the amendment; they didn't want to wait more three years for the right to regulate anchoring. Let's keep alert; these things have a habit of sneaking in when we aren't looking...

Wow. That was a lot closer than it should have been. Glad BoatsUS and other organizations were paying attention. Had the amendment passed, localities would have been able to pass their own ordinances restricting anchoring, in addition to those mooring programs, which would defeat the whole purpose of the bill.
Florida State Senator Margolis is a piece of work. She's obviously looking out for whoever put her in office -- she represents some big-moneyed waterfront owners that don't want their views tainted. Not a friend to boaters at all.

Re: New Florida Anchoring Amendment!
3 people voted no. Over 100 yes for final passage. Another pointless law on the books in florida..
wonder how much $$$$ FWC gets to keep "studying" the pilot program? gotta hope Wolfie wins in federal court.

If if weren't for this law, Miami (and other locales) would be passing local ordinances to prevent anchoring a certain distance from whatever real estate they care about, so I'm not sure I agree with the "pointless" bit.

Re: New Florida Anchoring Amendment!
A new amendment was filed to the senate bill 1126. Final vote is today for passage. Would allow ANY MUNI to regulate distance anchored from residence? 1/4 mile, 1/2 mile?
Maybe has something to do with the now legal backyard DIY gun ranges???
I still believe if the entire bill fails, the original anchoring law remains in effect that prevents any local anchoring laws. Just the pilot programs dies.
