New Boat Gear/ Provisions/ Safety Checklist

Does anyone have a link or list of where to begin on stocking our boat. We are closing on our boat next week (44 Leopard) and bringing it home from South Florida. We will be on it for 7-10 days of sailing before we make it back to our home port and so we will need to pack everything we can think of including safey gear and all supplies. Obviously, we know the basics but was hoping someone had created a check list to start from. Thanks

Re: new boat gear/provisions/safety checklist

We've just started doing the opposite of unloading everything and inventorying - unfortunately my sailing days are past me.

Here's a rough list of what we have:

checklists for VHF, boat check, engine diagnostic flowchart, electrical diagram
jack lines
flags & day shapes
series drogue
go bag
life raft
flares
separate water jugs
bucket w/ lead weight glued to one side
kettle
camper towels
pipe and lighter
charts
barometer/clock
eperb
hull scrub
nonskid pad
drying line
meat line
ties
hot knife
splice kit
sewing kit
mesh bag & rope
filters & various hoses/clamps

The Voyagers Handbook by Beth Leonard and Evans Starzinger is a great resource.

Re: New Boat Gear/ Provisions/ Safety Checklist

I always start with the ISAF Cat 0 gear requirements. These are the expert tested and debated list of safety equipment that must be carried by race boats in all weather conditions (meaning down to 0C temperatures). You don't need to bring it all, but you should specifically exclude things from their list you won't need (full immersion suits for instance).

That takes care of all the safety gear. The rest is spares (for all engines, pumps, etc) which is dependent on the installed equipment. I like to bring a lot of sail handeling gear, because I tweak stuff and like to play with sail trim, an exact list is boat dependent. But at least enough spares to fully rig a spinnaker.

Then the household gear... Plates, dishes, silverware, sheets, pillows, whatever you need to be comfortable. But try not to bring a lot of extra stuff. You don't need table service for 12.

For a list of safety related equipment, a good checklist can be found here...

For galley supplies and provisioning see "The Boat Galley". You may have to hunt around the site but I know she has a list in the archives. Good luck!

From South Florida to where. Not meaning to be crass but the question poses the question do you have the sailing experience?

Better yet, she has a spreadsheet!

Re: New Boat Gear/ Provisions/ Safety Checklist

When I worked for West Marine, I had the pleasure of working with many experienced cruisers, some of whom worked for West Marine (Pam Wall) and some of whom did not (John and Amanda Neal). Based largely on John and Amanda's list of gear, I put together a modified list which became a lengthy, and I think opportune West Advisor. Pam Wall was also a great help. After I left the post of "West Advisor" at West Marine, the very talented Tom Burden continued to write and update the West Advisors, so his work is included.

I think you'll find it helpful.

Actually acquiring these items will insure that they will not be needed.
The fault will occur in the devise you did not get spares for.
Be sure and pack your sense of humor.

Probably obvious, but include a variety of hand tools.

Where is HOME, Jacksonville, FL, Annapolis, Halifax, SFO, Dutch Harbor AK? Just get the essential safety gear for the trip, and slowly buy what you need when you get home. NO need to rush. As for provisioning, A few days of your favorite Food is plenty, you are not far from civilization, dock at marina often and eat out. No need to swaet over this. Have fun and enjoy the trip.
