New Antifoul

Hello all,
I was speaking with a fellow catamaran owner today where the conversation centred on his forthcoming haulout. He spoke about a new anti-foul that I had not come across before and appears (here in Australia) very new.
It is a product by Ocean Guard (no affiliation of any description) It appears to be a silicon type based product that restricts marine growth and has the advantage of being able to go over any surface. It claims it is able to be uses on props and shafts as well as the hull. Even more amazing it the claim they will guarantee their product worldwide for 3 years.
My fellow cat owner is hauling out in two weeks and has all intentions of using this product. I will be watching it very very closely to see if the advertised claims are up to scratch.
Thoughts everyone

Re: New Antifoul

I've tried "miracle" anti fouling coatings in the past with great disappointment. I caution anyone who wants to try something like that to buy a smal amount (eg quart or liter) and try it on a square meter of underwater area. That way if it doesn't work out you have a smaller mistake to correct.

Correcting large mistakes on boats is co$tly. Been there done that.

Re: New Antifoul

Good advise SFT, it doesn't sound as if it would be easy to overcoat with a traditional anti foul again.

I have heard about it and read the website. I'm a bit concerned about some of the data. For example the sales blurb touts it as "non toxic", but the product requires the addition of at least 10% xylene prior to application. Xylene is quite toxic, both in the acute and particularly in a chronic way, especially at such high concentrations. The Safety Data Sheet confirmed this but falls a bit short in preventative OHS. Definitely not non toxic!

It way be the new wonder product, but I'll wait and see a bit more proof first.

Re: New Antifoul

Sounds excellent
But I'm with tuskie wait for more feed back & proof.
If it works as advertised (3yrs) it would be good value
In my experience all most nothing work as advertised

Re: New Antifoul

Catamarans are great for trials. Do one hull with the tried and true, and the other hull with the new wonder goop.
Let us know..

Re: New Antifoul

What I know about xylene is that it is frequently used as a solvent/thinner. In that application, it would likely evaporate and not be part of the product once it has dried. It can be used to make other products but I don't think it would remain as xylene as it would undergo a chemical transformation.

Aside from that, I would certainly like to see the results of your experiment.

Post pictures!

A quick review of the interwebs reveals the company claims to be the best. However, I find scant info posted by others that agree with this. No reference on the CF. No reviews anywhere except for the shills on their own site. And it ain't cheap.

Re: New Antifoul

We.have had the ocean guard on our cat for 3 weeks and the hull is covered in barnacles. We hauled out at boat works an put the new anti foul on. We have just had a message back from the company saying that the company that was producing it sub contracted it out to China.as a result the company is ruined and ceased selling the product!!!
Please advise anyone you know NOT to use it at this stage.

Re: New Antifoul

Oh bugger, the mate telling me about this product only hauled his boat this last weekend and used the new Ocean Guard antifoul. . No wonder he was having trouble getting it delivered. Problem I have now is do I tell him what I just found out or let him find out himself.

Re: New Antifoul

There are 2 products Ocean Guard & Ocean gard. The latter is what is appearing here. I've put it on & will report after a period. Can't use the boat due to a TKR done after relaunch!!! The people behind the product sale were to display it at the boat show this week. The 5.5 ltr tin did the same area as 10ltrs of normal antifouling!!

Re: New Antifoul

Don't use it
I just applied it and in only 3 weeks barnacles have covered the bottom is a scam and I cannot contact the firm.
Done in the Gold coast.
