New and looking for friends and advice

Hi everyone!!! I'm new to the forum but I'm obsessed with sailing since I first stepped on a sailboat about 3 years ago. I just bought a Newport 16, and I feel like its the right for for a first boat. I do want to get a wind vane and maybe a bigger genoa head sail, but I'm looking to get away as cheap as possible. Any recommendations???

Welcome!

Cheap and wind vanes aren't usually discussed in the same sentences. Are you sure you want a wind vane for a 16-footer? Are you planning long trips? If you know the headsail dimensions, you can get second-hand sails. There are a number of places online. Maybe try out something like that before you buy new.

Unless you just mean a windex, wind direction arrow for your mast? In which case, those are $20ish or so on up in most places.

Hey the Newport 16 looks like a great starter boat. Perfect to spend a night or two camping on and easy to take out yourself. Congratulations! Show us some pictures of how it looks. Check out Bacon Sails, and Minney's Yacht Surplus for used sails. Minneys is usually a little cheaper. Also keep an eye on craigslist and other classified boards you never know what will pop up. Don't forget the safety gear depending how and where you'll use the boat. Enjoy and have fun. Remember if you're not out there bumping docks, running arground, and generally causing mayhem when you're learning your not doing it often enough!
