“NEW” 300% Breaking Strain All Dyneema soft shackle

After a year of working to improve my standard shackle which has a breaking strength of 250-260% of the strength of the Dyneema and a fair investment in material and testing; I have reached my goal. I had set a goal of 300% breaking strength or taking the Dynaeema as far as I could take it, back when I started making these shackles.
The new shackle is not only strong but Tough. It is intended for extreme applications for use in sailing, climbing, flat line, off road or rescue. When the need for safety and durability is paramount this shackle will deliver. I call it my “TOUGH GUY” shackle.
This shackle made of ¼” HTS-75 Dyneema from West Marine broke at 29,700 lbs. force, 1,800 PSI hydraulic pressure on a 5” diameter cylinder. That equated to 306% of the strength of the Dyneema which has a breaking strength of 9,700 lbs.

re: “NEW” 300% Breaking Strain All Dyneema soft shackle

Hate to thread drift on the third post, I have been itnterested in the performance of knotless connectors for use with dyneema line but have been without the means to do the testing.

Basically scaled up from the kind of connectors used for spectra fishing line. Maybe this is of interest to you?

Stupid simple to make and use. Proven effective for fishing. Could be used for attaching a snubber to a dyneema rode or for attaching dyneema standing rigging or whatever.

Cheers

Looks like a great idea but I'm trying to eliminate metal on all my running rigging unless its screwed to the deck.

Along with my new “TOUGH GUY” shackle I have several Dyneema projects worth mentioning. First credit goes to Brian Toss for his development of the Button knot shackle with his “Stronger Shackle”. I use the Button knot exclusively on my projects.

Interesting work, although a % strength claim based on a breakage test is always a gray area... (most of the time, the dyneema line would not break at the stated tension in a test either).

Are you going to publish how to make your improved shackle (like most of the other improved shackles)? If so, where?

Thanks.

We just spoke to Brian about doing a rigging inspection - I'll show him your post when he comes to the boat!

Was it just me that read the title and thought the term "B.S." meant something else entirely

Yes, me too...thought right away meant... "Best Shackle"
OK I admit getting punchy here on Long Island, homebound in snow storm.
Is now spring time, boat in water, still few winter projects to complete and should be sailing. Maybe next week.
In meantime will make some BS soft shackles...(smiley face goes here)
