Need info on Gibraltar

I want to get a new sail sent to me in Gibraltar sometime in September and I had some questions. If we had the boat on the Spanish side (cheaper) what sort of border is there between the British side and Spain? I don't want to pay VAT tax on a new sail that will not stay in Spain for more than a few days. Do workers go between both countries or is there a tight control? Can I have the sail delivered in Gibraltar and take it back to the boat in Spain??

Re: Need info on Gibraltar

This quiz question is almost too easy. Have Mrs Sailor meet you at the Gibraltar fuel dock with the sail. Its only 300 meters from the Spanish marina.

Then fill up with the cheapest diesel in the Med. With some of the money you just saved on the VAT. Win win

Re: Need info on Gibraltar

Thousands of people cross the border between Gib and Spain everyday, mostly without problems. However, every now and again, the Spanish get upset and start inspecting every vehicle crossing to make sure no 'contraband' is being smuggled. If your sail gets caught up in that it could get expensive.

If you are only planning on being in Spain for a few days I would just move the boat to Gibraltar and pickup the sail there.

Gib marinas are pretty cheap. Have it delivered there and stay a night or 2 at queens way marina. Anchor In la linea if it's still allowed afterwards.

To stay at Queens Way for a night and have the sail delivered to the marina will probably only cost around 25 pounds.

Is easy to cross, however things are getting worse.
Bear in mind that in Gibraltar is a 12% VAT on some imported goods.
