need any advice on coastal cruising trip

Hi

I know how to sail small sailboats (lasers, 420s etc) well, and I am looking to buy a small trailer sailer (20 feet and under) on a budget to undertake a long coastal sailing trip around the coast of new zealand. I want to start small doing multiday trips at first and then work up to doing a month or longer. I am planning to stay close to the coast, so these trips would not involve the open ocean. Any advice on what kind of boat to buy/any advice at all would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

It may be close to the coast, but make no mistake, this is still an ocean sailing trip. The most dangerous part about ocean sailing is that final approach to the coast.

Costal hops can be done in a sub 20ft boat, and even dinghys, but the planning and preparation will be even more than needed for a larger boat.

Navigation, and weather are the two major priorities to get a thorough understanding, and the two most important for the safety of such a trip.
