N aussie refit locale

We're planning on our first major refit since leaving Seattle this fall in Aussie. We'd previously talked about just heading through the Torres and over to Darwin. After corresponding with a couple local yards seems like this location would suit our needs.

However, a friend recently raised the question of cost, as Darwin is a bit farther removed than other big Aussie ports.

We're now also considering doing this work in Cairns. Any Aussies have an opinion on services avail v. cost for these two ports?

At a minimum we're planning:
- replace bowsprit and boomkin (with whatever is close to Douglas Fir in Oz)
- replace six more stays
- have a new dodger built. new sailcovers as well.
- Engine work: replace heat exchanger, possibly fresh water pump.
- lots of other little things

cheers, --Warren

I would suggest that Cairns will be better, have better facilities, cheaper, ertc. also, you should check out the height of high/low tides areound Darwin - you might get a bit of a surprise!

Neither Cairns nor Darwin are noted for cheap though both will have the talent and facility. Your Douglass fir will be imported ask for "Oregon" and that will ne what you want I believe. If you looking to save money on a sizable refit, Bundeburg and Maryborough are going to be less on labour and material, probably much less, but well off your course... but maybe worth it.

Always good to see a yank boat in the harbours.. welcome!

Cheers

Bob
