Worth a read even if you dont go this way. Interested in more detail about why DoubleU doesn't reccomended multi's. I have very little experience with them, so I cant really comment either way. Certainly shallow draft is a big problem to achieve on an oceangoing mono. Twin keels seem to make sense for you in that case as a good compromise.

Also look at the philosophy's of the "simple sailor" ming ming and the way he has converted a small boat into an ocean cruiser. While I think they are too small for two people, and the junk conversion is too much work and expense. His ideas about positive bouyancy and simplicity are good.

I will warn some young cruisers that may potentially be looking at a small cat as an option.

The only person that I know that had 'downgraded' from a cat to a mono is my good sailing buddy who took off in a Tiki. he gave up on the Tiki and went for a (sub-) 30ft mono for his rtw.

I must also say I have seen very many cruisers in very small monos but very few cruisers in very small cats. I guess this is all about the space available and the comfort attached.

Good point, a guy I know took off with his wife in a Tiki 26. I saw them leave, neat boat and nice people. They had a great trip, But with two peoples gear aboard the boat was very overloaded, so I guess its not just about the comfort but also the ability too carry a decent load that makes small multis a challange.

Ha, you dont often hear that! I think the average 40-50 foot cat seems to have enough carrying capability to cope with a small family ok, as long as they aren't packrats, but as you get smaller it gets progressively harder and harder. The consequences of overloading a multi are pretty dire safety wise. Where as mono's seem to run out of space long before the boat gets too dangerous.

sure enough a 50' cat is an ideal cruising boat (some of them...) - but $$$$$
