The weird thing is i dont even think my motor has a thermostat. I mean i cannot imagine where it would be. This is a 1976 Johnson seahorse 4hp, the shaft spins the impeller that pushes water up this pipe into the engine block. There really is only one way into the engine the way out is the exhaust pipe.

IIRC you are right. I had a Johnson 2hp of about the same vintage. It is a pretty simple engine. Are you sure that the copper water tube in the lower unit fit into the grommet in the bottom of the power head when you reassembled it? It is pretty easy to put the engine together without the tube remaining in both the pump and the head.

Try probing the water pathways with some plastic weed whacker line. Sometimes that will clear out an offending chunk of crap. But even if it did, it sounds like a vinegar soak may be in order.

great engines,but the only way to clear a blockage on them is by taking off the cylinder head,which has it's own set of problems like siezed bolts,corroded housing etc.

i still think sculling is way cooler!,after all engines are a relatively new innovation in the world of boats!

Doesn't sound like you need a new engine - you just need to clean the one you have. Back when I had an outboard, I always had a couple of those long needles used to sew meat (turkeys and such) together before putting them in the oven. You need to find the exit hole for the cooling water and shove one of these needles up through it. That will clean out the salt deposit and get the water flowing.

Then take some vinegar and rig a closed loop so the vinegar recycles through the cooling system. Start the engine and let it run with he vinegar until the vinegar get hot. Stop and clean the exit hole again with a needles.

Your engine will probably run without any problems now. Poke a needle through on a regular basis and very year run some water with a little glycol or oil through the engine to clean out the salt deposits before laying it up for the winter.

the evinrude johnston 4hp dosent have a tell tale,all the exhaust and cooling water exits via the lover leg.
taking off the head is the only option on this model if the block is not in the copper tube from the impellor pump.
