Moving boat to Portugal ?

Hi,

Any issues costs/risks with relocating yacht from UK to Portugese Marina for a year or two ?

- Any import/tax risks other than marina fees ?
- Changes/upgrades required
- Local regulations/qualifications or other ?
- Issues with keeping boat in a marina and visiting occasionally

- If not sail it transport by road of Beneteau 411 with 2 m keel (risk of vibration or other structural damage etc) ?
- How long to sail the 1,600 NMs !

General thoughts/comments/advise appreciated on one or more points above.

Declan

No once your a uk tax resident. And you dont have income or property in portugal, No problems at all. Where is the 1600 nm coming from its about 800 from Falmouth. Takes about a week, I'd sail it rather then transport it, transporting it by road will be 10 to 15k

Question Re: Moving boat to Portugal ?

Thx for the feedback. I am in the Moray Firth Scotland hence the 1600 NM depending on route/weather. Interested in views on how long that would take as could only take up to max 3 weeks off. 21 days makes an average of 80 NM a day which is quite a high average if stopping a lot and also allowing for weather downtime on such a trip 3-4 days say. I have in good winds averaged 8 knots for extended hours but for planning would have to assume no more than 5 giving 120 NM in a 24 hr run.

I went around Ireland and Scotland last year stopping every night averaging 45 NM per day and that include 4 days stuck in port. That gives a conservative 35 days for this trip. with regular night sailing maybe I could get it down to 25 ?

Re: Moving boat to Portugal ?

last delivery i did from glasgow to gib in a 43 ft motorsailor took 3 weeks with 4 weather related stops, longest was 8 days in tangier waiting for winds to get below 45 knots from the east in the straits.

previous to that phwelli to lagos took 6 1/2 days in a beneteau 43 with a lunch stop in sines.

luck of the draw ! past biscay and the straits

Portugal has a pretty long coastline. Where do you want to go to?
The Algarve is the prettiest spot. Good winds and top sunshine. Water as clear as glass.

Why would you be stoping a lot. Say at sea she'll do 120 140 a day (24 hours) in the right conditions

Re: Moving boat to Portugal ?

Am planning algarve as seems to have lots of options beyond sailing and good point to head to canaries or med for other seasons. Stops probably inevitable due to weather but also would be nice to enjoy trip and stop again in Scillies or Lisbon etc.. Now planning via Caledonian canal and Irish sea as more direct and maybe better wind than east coast UK etc.

Re: Moving boat to Portugal ?

you need to work the tides coming down the irish sea as they can run fast.
plan to enter the biscay with a period of easterlies.
baiona in spain is a good first stop.
la coruna is another option, but easy to get stuck there due to weather.
beware of river enterance's on the portugese west coast if there is a big west swell running,or out going tide.

+1 on that advice

I would say the Irish Sea route is easier then Uk east coast , Dover and La Manche

Hit off from Kilmore Quay to give you Westing or even Cork ( 180 T to Bayona !)Keeps you well out of the bay ,especially if you banana west.

Lagos is easily the nicest marina, good buzz, good yard, train.bus to Faro, town right beside. Portimao has really gone downhill as a town and the marina at Praia de Roche is just another upmarket Europarking lot for boats. Villiamora is for people with medallions, Faro worth considering, underrated town Faro IMHO

Re: Moving boat to Portugal ?

Rather than busting a gut, how about getting the boat down to South coast of UK (or Northern France - Brittany) yourself in your 3 weeks and then have a delivery skipper lined up to do the last leg(s) to Portugal? Or even have the delivery Skip do the first leg?

Probably need some flexibility both on your time off work and with the delivery skipper - maybe get in contact with Boatman61 (Phil), he sounds pretty flexibile and has been based in Portugal for a few years - albeit presently on a delivery trip (from Carribean to Oz) - now in the Pacific somewhere, halfway?
