There is a small 75mm diameter plastic cap on the top of the rudder post of my Dufour 35 Classic. Just there to protect the hole into which the emergency tiller fits. Over the years the plastic hardened and eventually cracked. Took the damaged cap to the local ship chandler and after some research was quoted $285.00 plus GST and freight - more than $400.
Went onto Ebay, bought a second hand 1960s 9" Hercus lathe (Southbend clone for those of you in the US of A) for $500.00 and bought 300mm of 90mm diameter Delrin for $90.00. I made 10 replacement caps out of the material.
Since then the lathe has been used for dozens of jobs including machining a swivel for the Lewmar mainsheet car and replacing teak tapered pins on Balinese Steamer Chairs.
I am sooooo tired of being ripped off for boat parts

Well I almost won. I didn't buy it.

I took apart two identical winches, One had a nice sporty stamp announcing it was a "racing" winch.

I was thinking how much extra did the original buyer pay for the "racing" winch?

The two winches were nearly 100% identical except for one inner plate. Two holes were drilled in the inner plate of the racing winch making it lighter by perhaps 1/2 a gram.

When I bought my boat I was baffled by a strange item in my fuel line. There was no filter to change, only the fuel line in and out. I chucked it.

Later I found it in the West System Catalog. It was a pure useless snake oil conditioner which was supposed to improve the fuel.
Pure junk.

However, again, I didn't buy it so it doesn't count.

I paid something like $2 for a few special washers for my goiot hatches. I could not source them locally so I had to pay $20 to ship them....

It was still cheaper and easier to find a machine shop to make them for me.

about those washers..... Back a long time ago, when the peso was 1200 to the dollar, a friend neatly drilled a center hole through the center of some pesos to make his own washers.

I just paid $400 for a raw water pump to fit a Kubota generator. The same pump, but for a different mounting flange, costs $240 from Volvo. Then there's $850 for a heat exchanger core . . . . . with no moving parts.

A Genoa car, in a decent boat, comes in the 500+eur range. No surprise.

I had to buy the Sea hose of the propeller axis. Though nicely lathed, it is 560eur for one pound of solid steel.

Also, the Raymarine rudder sensor at 240eur, for a piece of plastic with a resistor Inside.. is the King of rip-offs. In fact I decided of decommissioning Raymarine..for good.

Ah.... the Raymarine rudder sensor.... in NZ .. autopilot playing up.... actually paid a man... he picked problem on the instant... ' Its the sensor... dead segment near midships... always happening... its just a cheap rheostat... $NZ400 thanks'
