Re: Moore 24 Circumnavigation
I follow his current trip every day, and have read all his books. Interesting fellow. Just being able to pass the time over literally months at sea, alone, in a non-standing headroom boat is amazing. And he never before this time had any sort of communication device. He was on his own, in the most complete way.

Re: Moore 24 Circumnavigation
Another admirer here. I've read his books and have been following the journey since before he left Opua. One day I hope to emulate his journey, although certainly in something a little larger than 24'.

Re: Moore 24 Circumnavigation
So, Webb Chiles just single-handed his Moore 24 non-stop from Darwin, Australia to within 3 miles of Durban South Africa, when the worst conditions he has faced the entire 40 days or so came upon him. Windyty indicates 34 knots of wind in his face and 16 foot swells at only 8 second ntervals. That's not fun. Looks from the tracking like he hove to and has been blown back out several miles. I've tracked him the whole trip and it seems to me he's had glorious conditions the whole way, until yesterday....

Re: Moore 24 Circumnavigation
I've got to hand it to the guy. I am part owner a Moore 24 and it is not a comfortable boat IMO. It's pretty tight space-wise both above and below deck. Sure, it's fast, but that light displacement also makes it fairly reactive to changes in wind and swell. We're a crew of three pretty big guys and it sometimes takes all of us on the rail to hold the boat down when a gust rolls through. We worry about broaching and swamping it on the river we sail on where we could swim to shore if we really had to - I can't imagine being in the middle of the Indian ocean on that boat. Very big kudos to him, but I'll take something in the 40-45' range please. On the other hand, I could also just be an inexperienced wimp...

Re: Moore 24 Circumnavigation
Is he still doing his age in push ups and sit ups? That would be 74 or 75 every day I believe.

Re: Moore 24 Circumnavigation
Interesting how he recovered and is circling back toward Durbin today
23/Aug/2016 @ 12:00:05 UTC
29° 31.66S, 031° 40.76E / Course: 221° @ 0.6 knots
22°C at 3m above sea level
I wonder if this is correct: 0.6 knots
