Mono vs Multi

[Still Hopefull]

I have seen a few places where proponents of multihulls state their reasons why multis are better. I have seen very few instances where the monohull community espouse the virtues of their choice of yacht.

What I have picked up so far, (and this may not be correct), is the following:

Multihulls:
-Have more space. Moving around space as well as storage space.
-Are safer in that they are harder to capsize and once they DO go over they take longer to sink.
-Are faster.
-Are more stable. You don't have to cook, eat etc at an angle. Therefore more comfortable.

Monohulls:
-Cost less, both in purchase and in maintenance and mooring costs.
-Can carry more weight, albeit they have less space. (Don't quite understand that one.)

Can any monohullers out there suggest other reasons why a mono might "beat" a multi. Of course any multihullers are also welcome to throw in some supporting arguments for two or more hulls should they so wish.

Note that these points are just what I understand from what I've read and heard. Don't shoot me if any are incorrect

If there is already a thread that has dealt with this topic maybe you could point me to it. I couldn't find one, and yet am sure that I am not the first to ask this question.

Have a look in the Multihull & Monohull Forums. I'm sure you find some threads there on the subject. Are you sure you don't want to ask an easier question like "What is the meaning of Life?"

A mono can survive a flip/knockdown.

A Cat's MOST stable position is up-side down.

Some people find cats way more comfortable because they don't heel. Others find the motion of a cat disconcerting.


mono's can usually outperform a cat going into the wind, but cats are generally faster under sail.

Cats are vastly more expensive to moor, and harder to find a slip for in most of the country.

Cats with two engines are much more maneuverable.

by definition cats have a shallower draft, and can be easily beached during a tide for maintenance.

Once you've found the meaning of life, sailing will definately enhance it. As for the difference between men and women.....well after you work that one out you will know the meaning of wife.

Most Mono owners feel secure enough not to feel they have to justify / be defensive about there choice of boat to complete strangers on the internet.

monos and multis both have advantages and disadvantages. neither one is overall better or worse, anyone telling you different is just bashing and running their mouths... which one suits you depends entirely on your personal preferences... the whole idea is to figure out which suits you best, get it and GET OUT ON THE WATER... personally i like them both, which ever you choose you can come over to mine for a beer anytime...

Althought I am sailing on mono most of the time, I still sail and race occosionally with monos. For me the biggest advantage of mono is motoring ability against high sea and wind. This is a terrible situation for a multi, particularly if the bridge is not high enough. Sure, the mono is not comfortable either, but is much more stable thanks to its narrower hull and heavy keel underneath.
