She looks salvageable if he left a locator beacon on board and can get a ride back out there.

Re: Mono in distress

Looks like a Bruce Roberts Spray variation (pilothouse) in steel.

The roller furling jib is shredded.

Loss of rudder often leads to abandoned boats.

That seems like a long distance (210 miles) rescue by shore based rescue boat. Lucky sailors.

EXCERPT:
"The NSW Police offshore patrol vessel Nemesis set off in response to their emergency beacon on Tuesday night and reached the yacht - some 210 nautical miles north-east of Sydney - on Wednesday morning in 6-metre swells and gale-force southerly winds.

"It was truly amazing, to think that somebody had come that far to save us," Dwyer said.

The pair were transferred to the Nemesis by a container ship, the ANL Elanora, while their yacht was left to drift at sea."

---------

Notice it says they were transferred by a container ship.

Re: Mono in distress

Good to see they are ok. It actually is possible to sail a boat with no rudder, but your choice of headings and speed is pretty limited. In their case it looks like the weather probably exhausted them anyway.

Re: Mono in distress

I note that the rudder failed 3 days earlier and that they activated the EPIRB after rolling (capsizing).

Well done to the AUS RCC, the NSW police, the container ship, the crew of stricken vessel and the aircrew taking the video (presumably a Coastwatch aircraft) who were dropping the survival equipment.

Clearly a team effort

Hard to believe that boat rolled, rig still completely intact, dinghy on deck, Radar and Solar panels still there.

Re: Mono in distress

Guess now would be the appropriate time for someone (who isn't a naval architect, but has steered a boat for a while) to point out how impossible it is to calculate rudder loads on a monohull....

While it does seem surprising the solar panel and wind vane steering is intact, I can understand the rig surviving. I am assuming the dinghy and fenders etc were deployed sometime after the rolling and in preparation for leaving the vessel.

Methinks your signature quote is very appropriate

Re: Mono in distress

So in the old days, before long range communication, I guess they would have to jury rig something to get to shore.

Dunno if I would call the weather in the last few days 'normal' either in the Tasman or the North Island .. I read somewhere that the wx up the top of the N Island is a 'once in a hundred year' event Widespread flooding, slips, road chaos as rain continues around North Island - National - NZ Herald News

A photo taken on the Manly ferry two days ago... inside the Heads ..

Re: Mono in distress

Ping, that looks like serious boarding seas. I suspect there were some commuters with unexpected underwear changes when they got home!
