I am NOT experienced in boat recovery so the following is just a WAG.

New owners will either want the boat for local (or future) cruising use or want to cruise away right now.

If the former, it will be around the area in which they live (presumably SE Qld); if the later, most likely destination for a Qld owner at this time of the year would be heading north. Most cruisers use marinas sooner or later so contacting every marina from the Gold Coast to Cairns might be a good idea.

A long shot (and perhaps not so easy to do) would be asking Customs to be on the alert for clearing this apparently registered vessel out of Oz.

If the police are actively involved in the search for it, perhaps they could enlist the aid of Coastwatch????

It is a tough one!

Re: Missing Lyle Hess Cutter

Perhaps you could ask CF participant cruisers who are located in Qld. to print a BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR, or if you have seen,: "Tuska," with copies of the pictures already shown on this thread, and a contact phone number. Then put the notice up in the laundromats at all the marinas from Southport YC through Cairns, which has 3 marinas. There are many in between, of course, but maybe that would help. Offer a reward if the information leads to locating the vessel.

Of course, if the vessel's appearance has been intentionally altered, all bets are off.

Thanks Wotty after a very hectic week I finally sat down this morning and have sent a number of e mails to various marinas ,the rest I shall try to contact by phone . Also good suggestion Ann those marina laundromats or bulletin boards have always been of interest to me. Does anyone know of a VHF or SSB net for Australian waters? I was just thinking about the La Paz Mexico one back in the old days Cheers Tom

Tom, you could try the Comedy net (ham) at 2040 GMT every day on 7.087 MHz. We have a few folks checking in from all up and down the coast, and I think some would be in a position to help. I can't do so now because I'm in the states.

Cheers,

Jim

Hi Tom, as a Lyle Hess owner it was distressing to read the sad tale (to date) of 'Tuska'. Do you have a conclusion yet. We hope for a good ending!
Cheers

No conclusion as of yet. Jan is waiting on AMSA to re-establish her ownership. Tuska will always be a dreamboat to me, however life moves on and I am hoping to finalize purchase of a Collin Archer next week.
Cheers Tom

Pass on best wishes to Jan in her quest. Good luck with your boat purchase. If it doesn't succeed let me know as we have made the decision to sell our boat this Spring, after her annual slip.
Cheers

Hi Tom, good to hear that you are making the trip to Tassie. I'm still deciding! seeing your latest post made me recall the last episode of Jan's missing Lyle Hess - 'Tuska', if memory serves.
Did you ever get a resolution to this sad tale?
Cheers

No resolution for Jan. In our last conversation she stated" I have been played" she also suggested AMSA was calling it a Civil matter due to Michel having acquired NSW Boat code Rego.
If these statements by Jan are accurate it raises questions regarding AMSA suggesting Australian Registration is the same as having a title to your vessel. Cheers Tom

Tuska of Sydney is now called April of Cygnet and moored at Cygnet Harbour Tasmania.

Makes one wonder what the story has been in the intervening 7 years?

We see April frequently, never knew that she had an "interesting" history!

Re: Missing Lyle Hess Cutter

Welcome aboard CF, Ian Nash.
What an intriguing first post!

Is there another instalment of this tale forthcoming?

Re: Missing Lyle Hess Cutter

According to the Australian Wooden Boat Festival data base 'April of Cygnet' was built in 1992, the boat in question in this thread was said to have been bought by the owner (Jan Murray) in 1989 and was supposedly a used vessel, so presumably built before 1989.

Intriguing 🤔

Some cosmetic differences between the vessels.

April of Cygnet.

Tuska.
