Measuring for Sails - Reasonable Fees?

Can anyone tell me what a "reasonable" measurement fee would be for a jib? Sailmaker is not local so I'm hiring an experienced person to do the measurements and provide them to the loft.

Past experience anyone?

North has a form for measuring the boat so the sails fit.
My X and I did it in about 30 minutes. I would give the sail loft a call. Do not rely on the specs for the boat, always measure it and try and do as much yourself as possible. If I was there and we had the form, I would do it for two pints of decent beer.

It really is rather simple to do the measurements. You just attach your tape measure to the halyard with a down haul. You then hoist the tape measure and measure both the height against the mast and the hypotonuse. Then measure the base. Really simple.

You can look at Sailrites website (www.sailrite.com), they have detailed instructions for doing the measurements. I imagine it wont take you much longer to do it yourself than to find a pro, watch, then pay them.

Here in Florida, everything seems to take $100/hr. so I imagine $100 for measurements. In North Carolina, I'd just ask someone in the next boat.

Have the sailmaker sub the final measurements out someone local (rigger). That way the sailmaker is responsible for the fit of the sails.

If you are talking prelim measurements for a price quote, then just use the info in one of the many rig data bases.

Good idea on having the sailmaker sub-out the measurements. Problem is I'm not local to the boat yet and can't do it myself.
Trying to avoid being taken for a ride... but then again I've just bought a boat..

Fax a letter of authourization to the marina to get them access. Someting that says "sailmaker _____ is allowed to have subcontractor ______ measure the rig and sails on my boat.

The meeasurement phase is the least likely place to get taken for a ride. The sailmaker is going to be as accurate as possible. 'Cause if it doesn't fit... they get to fix it.
