Mbti (personality) of sailors

Hi everyone, some of the first forums I joined were early retirement forums. These forums are usually 50% INTJ's with 15% INTP's. I am a classic INTP. INTJ's usually represent 1-4% of the population so to have 50% of the forum means there is a certain type of person that wants to retire early.

I was wondering the same thing about long term cruisers. I was watching some single handed cruising youtube clips with my dad, who is an extrovert. He said, "wow, you really need to be an introvert to enjoy that lifestyle."

Most INTP's are seekers, dreamers, philosophers, minimalists, humanists, and iconoclasts. We tend to seek freedom, truth (even if it's subjective) , meaning in life and authenticity. Most of those qualities led me to this forum.

What is your mbti and what are the reasons you love to sail?

ISTP

I enjoy the sense of freedom and self reliance that comes with sailing.

I recently lost my secret decoder ring in a nasty bilge incident.

Well, an INTJ could help you fix that bilge. They are mostly engineers. They are very handy to have on a boat.

I didn't see in the letter jumbles the difference between a single hander and crew boat cruiser.

INTJ here, and an engineer, and retired early, sort of. I still have a business, but I can do my part from the boat, and I have a fantastic team running the brick and mortar part. Love sailing for the freedom, the variations, the tinkering, the challenge, the sunsets, the rum punches, the satisfaction. My husband is an engineer as well and his favorite parts are the sunsets on the water on the hook with a good sipping rum.

Like you, I am an INTP. I love to sail because gives a feeling of independence, adventure, multifaceted challenges, and provides a different perspective on things. It also involves experiencing forces and patterns of nature, mainly weather, and gives time to think/contemplate. I am also intrigued by the MBTI correlations also and find it amazing that 4% of the population by MBTI type INTJ provides half the early retiree forum participants.

Ixxx. Written like that because I'm almost-off-the-charts-I and almost perfectly 50/50 on each of the other 4 categories.

I don't particularly like sailing; too much work, too much deck clutter, and I can't walk on decks when boats are heeled on a port tack (injury). I do like boating, though... and will sail if that's the only alternative.

INTJ, and a severe majority of cruisers we've met fit that, if they didn't already know their rating.

That puts a significant portion of the INTJs on the sea. You have to be of a certain mindset to go to sea, and one who doesn't hesitate (and then changes hir mind a few minutes/hours/days later) isn't always the best seaman.

Order is a high-importance factor for Js...
