Re: Mbti (personality) of sailors

INTJ, and a severe majority of cruisers we've met fit that, if they didn't already know their rating.

That puts a significant portion of the INTJs on the sea. You have to be of a certain mindset to go to sea, and one who doesn't hesitate (and then changes hir mind a few minutes/hours/days later) isn't always the best seaman.

Order is a high-importance factor for Js...

Engineer and and INTJ mostly.

I studied 851 graduate engineers in terms of personality type a few years ago.

Myers Briggs type personality test results vary depending on a range of factors including working conditions, experience with the task and stress levels.

It was originally developed to match woman to manual work tasks in WWII. I wouldn't place too much emphasis on MBti for knowledge work.

INTJ, wish sometimes I were more of an S, maybe I'd like hands-on fixing stuff rather than planning how to fix stuff.

Usually the hands on part benefits from the planning part

I took the Meyers Briggs test so long ago up in Alaska, I forgot the name of it, much less what I was. I have enough trouble being a recovering Virgo with PTSD.

Re: Mbti (personality) of sailors

15 years ago I was judged an INTP, but it seems one should take the survey every few years, I've certainly changed with time. As for Zodiak sign, I believe Sagittarius is the luckiest sign, a good trait for a sailor...

Re: Mbti (personality) of sailors

A quick and dirty guide to Meyers Briggs test (w/apologies to the founders, so don't bust me on this!) -
Do you recharge your emotional/psychic "batteries" w/ light social contact ( E =Extrovert) or by being alone (I=Introvert)
Do you like concepts, theories, planning, the big picture (N= Intuitive) or more hands-on, just get the job done (S=Sensing)
Do you filter information through your thinking processes (T=Thinking) or your feelings (F=feeling)
Do you have a clock in your head (J=judging) or don't understand the question (P=perceiving)

If you say you recharge your batteries with a battery charger, you're prob. an S

ENTP-I enjoyed soloing for the first couple days, then quickly found myself doing the lonely sailor bar shuffle.

How can you tell the extroverted engineer? He's (or occasionally she) is the one looking at your shoes!

More Pisces, Cancer, and Scorpios than other signs. They are all water signs, next is air signs Aquarius, Gemini, Libra. The least is earth signs.
I Doesn't really mean anything, just an interesting fact.

INTJ former engineer full time Virgoan (some would say pita)
sorta interesting the concept that a particular personality type might be more prominent

Re: Mbti (personality) of sailors

I am an INFP and have ALL my astrological signs/houses/planets/galaxies/whatever in Aquarius. The guy who did a chart for me said that in 20+ years of dong charts, he had never seen anything like mine. I don't really have any idea what that means, but Master Jung held charts to be valid instruments and did one for all his analytical clients I have read.

I have had an almost overwhelming enchantment of sailing, water, boating, living aboard, and anything else related to the ocean since I can remember! I lived on board a beautiful (after I finished the restoration) 42' Colonial double cabin Cruiser in the Chesapeake Bay for several years, and my first son was born while we lived on board. His nursery was a wicker bassinet screwed down to the vee berth. The overhead mobile never stopped moving! I was lead carpenter in a small boatshop called The Ocran Boatshop, owned by an obstinate and cranky old one-eyed Armenian who had moved down from Long Island. He never messed with me though cause he couldn't replace my woodworking skills. Ha!!

I was privileged to be able to construct a Commander Monroe Presto Ketch from the original plans, eastern white cedar over white oak framing, while I worked there. I did everything except the painting on that one, cotton caulking and all. Spiled and hung two planks a day! I remember when she was launched, with 3 electric bilge pumps and one gas powered for backup onboard, that we wiped out the bilge with a couple of paper towels. The old fella just squinted at me through his one good eye for a little while and shook his head. Also got to the point that i could build a really pretty little 16' flatbottomed lapstrake skiff in about 52 hours, including the painting.

Sorry, got kinda lost in reminiscing there for a minute!

Just purchased a 37' Endeavor ketch, interior plan B, and am in the process of fitting her (Anicca) out for live-aboard coastal cruising. It's been 30 years since living aboard, and I can hardly believe it's coming round again. AT LAST!!!!

Docked near New Bern NC, USA.

Peace all!

Re: Mbti (personality) of sailors

As an INTJ (aka Don't Mess with MY Schedule), I've had to learn to lighten up on the Time Nazi thing when sailing, although I am really good w/tides.
I've noticed most of the folks answering this query are N folks who prob. like personality theory, rather than S folks who are prob. fixing their boats or fixing a drink.
