Re: Master and Commander

Dannc - I do not have a kindle but my Samsung Galaxy phone has a Kindle App and it works very well. I think that on board a boat a kindle makes a lot of sense, but having said that, there is something lovely about a paper book.

I feel much the same way about paper charts compared to electronic charts....

Exactly what Hornblower would have said to such a silly statement!

I have some first edition Hornblower books in not great condition but I prize them because the little drawings in them were done by Andrew Wyeth. If I remember correctly his father, famous illustrator N.C. Wyeth, got the contract to provide the sketches. It was such a small job that he passed it on to his son Andrew.
I was wondering/hoping someone would catch the meaning of "Hrrrmpph"

Yes, I do love hard back books and as long as the sun rises we can read them unlike the eReaders. But being able to read in bed without turning on the light makes SWMBO happy.

I am boat less but I would certainly have paper charts to back up the electronic charts. I love to look at maps and charts. I have a atlas that contains maps and charts from the US Civil War and it is interesting to look at what certain parts of the coast line USED to look like. I even pulled looked at some maps in that atlas that covered my county to see certain terrain features.

I don't know where this came from, and it's juvenile and silly, but it sums up my thoughts on Hornblower pretty well. That guy was a pouf!

Lol! You know you got a chuckle out of that one...

I mean he married a shrewish unattractive woman just so he wouldn't be bothered to come home to her after all...

Re: Master and Commander

I admit I did laugh.
Don't forget he ended up with Lady Barbara, who was played by Virginia Mayo in the movie. Not bad.

...
Hornblower was sorta modeled after Nelson who left his wife and had a scandalous affair with another man's wife. The husband knew of the affair and seem to be ok with his wife's behavior.

In spite of those, who shall not be named, who are attacking Hornblower's reputation by insinuating acts of sodomy by our Hero, it is well known that Hornblower was very much a Lady's man! And an HONORABLE Lady's Man.

Hrrrrmph!

Then of course there is the Jack Tar book. I make sure any potential girlfriend reads this first

Re: Master and Commander

I prefer the Ioan Gruffuud over the Sean bean DVDs.
