Mashford monocat

Hi all,
I am trying to find out some information on Mashford Monocat. Their performance, stability, point ability etc with a view to live aboard. Can't find much at all anywhere. Somebody out there must have sailed one

Thanks
Baldrick

Re: Mashford monocat

Interesting boat, the hulls are ballasted I take it and not relying on form stability?

Re: Mashford monocat

Not sure how it works spareau I have sailed lots of cats but info or road tests are not available. With the single bow and multi stern I wondered if they would be susceptible to burying the bow. I know there are plenty of fishing boasts with that type of hull which is very stable but how that works with a sail boat I'm not sure

There's a CJ Mashford listed in Tuugo.biz, in Queensland, Oz. It includes an address and telephone no.

Hi Baldrick:We have 10m sailing yacht which is monocat design. Just about the same as image above except our aft hulls are larger. Great coastal curiser with 3m swing keel. Very stable and sails well.Has a great cockpit about as big 12m yacht.

Design/make/model?

The keel is ballasted I assume?

Re: Mashford monocat

from what ive found out Chris Mashford designed that 10m version under the name Vortex and was built in WA by Bunbury Fibre Glass. The 50ft Monocat in question for sale in QLD was not his only one! theres one other 50 footer called 'Silver Bullet' built in New Zealand, i haven't seen that one? but assume its the same Hull as the Mashford Monocat 50 here in QLD, apparently it won the NZ to Tonga Rally in some year? so must sail ok.
Im actually seeing that QLD Monocat 50 today! (19/12/15 11:00) maybe the Dealer can shed more light?
Re: Keels, the Monocat 50 has two! the main one aft of the mast is a lift keel and yes it is Ballasted 3Ton, then there's an un-ballasted Daggerboard forward of the mast. Chris designed the monocat 50 along the lines of Jacques Cousteau's Monocat 'Alcycone' designed by naval architects Bureau Mauric, that was 100footer launched 1/3/85, but i don't know if ideas were shared in any joint venture? or if this 50 foot version of Alcyone is purely just off Chris's own drawings.
There's also another french designer Philippe Renaudeau that i emailed (just in case he new something on Chris's monocat) that has a Monocat 50 design, more modern, great looking deck saloon layout, a Twin Keel but bilge keels this time of 2.9 ton total ballast, Philippe's hull is completely different too.

I'll get back after i see this Mashford Monocat, try and post some snaps as well.

Re: Mashford monocat

Thanks but theres no need to contact Mashford now, that yacht was a bitted disappointment! Very run down, cheap fit out by owner and you could tell! plywood floor with just carpet over, i stepped in one area and my foot almost went through its rotten! It needs a full refit, re wire, re paint, all new sails, dubious looking engines very messy engine bay, everywhere i looked i saw work! one bad design is the coachroof from cockpit to saloon, its so low you hit your head and need to crouch to get in. Interior layout cramped, the only good point is the master bed. Its a shame because i can see potential in it, but it needs lots of love, time (its probably a 12month project) and bucket loads of money!
shes all yours Baldrick

did anyone find out anything about this boat?

I think I remember seeing the original 10m boat in Bunbury many years ago. I think it was called xcraft then. My immediate thought was, how good would like be to coastal cruise the Med and do the Canals of France etc
