Man Washes up in Marshall Islands 'After 16 Months Adrift'

Man Washes up in Marshall Islands 'After 16 Months Adrift'

"An emaciated man whose boat washed up on a remote Pacific atoll this week claims he survived 16 months adrift on the Pacific, floating more than 12,500 kilometers (8,000 miles) from Mexico, a researcher said Friday.

The man, with long beard and hair, was discovered Thursday when his 24-foot fibreglass boat with propellerless engines floated onto the reef at Ebon Atoll and he was spotted by two locals."

He didn't have fishing gear according to the article. He used his bare hands to catch turtles and birds. A turtle was found abord the boat when washed ashore.

I guess this blows some of the blue water capable boat arguments out of the water.

I cant imagine living through that kind of hell for so long though. He is a stronger man then I to survive for that long.

Don't sell yourself too short. You do what you gotta do. No doubt quite a bit if luck came into it. Doubt he would have survived to make SE Asia if the Marshalls. Would be interesting to see some pics. Would imagine will make into into main stream news if legit.

Re: Man Washes up in Marshall Islands 'After 16 Months Adrift'

Don't get me wrong I'm former Marine Infantry and an experienced outdoorsman/backpacker and I consider myself to be very resilient. I would try everything I could and give it all I had but Christ 16 months is just hard to fathom. Maybe I'd pull through maybe I wouldn't all I know is that man has my upmost respect for being able to do it.

One thing he had going for him is that he had someone with him to keep him motivated and company. Incredible story. Read the article.

The Guardian and Fox News are carrying the story, among others, so it must be true???

Apparently Jose Ivan had a partner on the boat, who died at sea, and more details should come out when he is brought to Majuro and someone who speaks Spanish can interview him.

Incredible! Alone, I think i would have lost it. I consider myself a bit of a loner when backpacking, preferring to avoid others on the trail. At least though, on Terra firma there is something to look at in terms of scenery.

Great story of fortitude to survive against insanely stacked odds.

OK, so maybe he survived on more than just fish, read a book called ALIVE when I was a kid sort of similar
