Authorities are still verifying his story, but it looks like it is turning out to be true. If so, that poor man!! I hope he is reunited with his family soon.

There are stories of nearly unbelievable survival. The already mentioned rugby team from Uruguay defied all odds and survived ten weeks 10,000 feet high in a remote area of the Andes. They were presumed dead after just 10 days.. considered the limit of survivability under the circumstances. When deciding when to discontinue, or wind down a SAR-op, as a ground SAR manager, I had to look at many factors. equipment, experience level, weather, time since last seen, ect. I would consider one month, under these circumstances, the probable survivable limit, and about three months the limit of survivability. This is without any additional information, so I could be way off. But, a year? Just don't see how.

The story evolves. 16 months is now 13. What else will change? Maybe nothing. The two propellerless engines still is odd. Even the engine stopped part, then what about the other one. The when and how of his companion. Regardless, hope they get him home soon.

So much more information we probably won't ever know. Was there a search? If not, why not? Were they working for someone else? Something was said about a boss.

Certainly reminders to anyone, however small the boat or short the planned trip to make sure someone knows your plans and knows when to be concerned you aren't where you planned. Make sure you have equipment necessary to be located. Flares. As Gilligan can tell you, even the simplest three hour tour can go astray.

After being in survival mode for 13 months, do you really know how long you have been out there?

I forgot what I had for lunch yesterday. After 13 months, I am surprised that he remembered when he left Mexico.

Be surprised what's out there..
150 miles W of the Galapagos we came across 3 x 21ft open wooden skiffs powered by 15hp O/B's.. 2 men to a boat..
Anything goes wrong on Momma boat and they're going nowhere fast..
Also.. remember their hard lifestyle/diet is gonna make them more likely to survive than the pampered pudgy Westerner

No, I have no idea about the passage of time unless I have a watch that has a date on it or something. And even other basic things like when I left, I don't see how I'd be thinking clearly. I would think I'd be a very poor source of information at the point of rescue. Then you throw in the language barrier.

I'm not criticizing his knowledge, just that initial reports on events like this are subject to change, just for such reasons.

Tough small boat offshore fisherman know how to survive on anything

When a little school kid in North America wants to play softball, his parent buys him a brand new uniform, bat, balls, sneaker, and helmet, and a new brand new DSLR for the father to take pictures of his son playing balls

When a poor kid in the third world country wants to play softball, he starts with nothing. And his father is not there as he is too busy to bring food home to feed his family.

So we are here at the comfort of our home bitching how stupid the poor kid playing softball without a helmet. We are so good in judging others.

On the news, it said the boat is 24 ft. In a down pour, I believe it can catch lot of rain water.
