Skeptical!

And phil, don't start that until this is verified.

No papers are taking it as gospel. And if it is true we will certainly hear all about it.

The original link had it in "Offbeat" when its obviously a headline story if true.
The other stories in the same section were

utah-ape-predicts-seahawks-will-win-super-bowl

A Utah ape that has correctly picked the Super Bowl winner for six straight years predicted Thursday that the Seattle Seahawks will be the next NFL champion.

Eli the ape ran into an enclosure Thursday morning and swiftly knocked down a papier-mache helmet bearing the Seahawks logo, signaling his pick, said Erica Hansen of Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City.

"He made his pick without any hesitation," Hansen said.

That could mean bad news for Broncos fans. The 13-year-old primate hasn't been wrong since 2006.

I wonder if he'll get busted for not having his entry paperwork properly completed?

Re: Man Washes up in Marshall Islands 'After 16 Months Adrift'

Yeah, I have to say that I'm pretty skeptical, too. I mean, you know how hard it is to catch a bird with your bare hands when you are fully healthy and alert? And turtles? I'm a reasonably strong guy, but nearly all of the turtles that I've seen were much too big for me to hoist into a boat with my bare hands. Never mind after months adrift at sea.

If it turns out to all be true then I will be quite amazed and impressed. For now, though, I have my doubts.

The story sounds a bit too unbelievable

Re: Man Washes up in Marshall Islands 'After 16 Months Adrift'

I read a book about a family that were sailing in the Pacific off the cost of South America when a whale hit and sunk their boat. I forgot how many months they were at sea in a life raft but it was a good long while. They survived by catching turtles, fish and birds. I just Googled to see if I could find their book but find a surprising number of hits regarding boats being sunk by whales. The book I remember was from the 1970's.

Water was a big problem and they survived by drinking turtle blood and sucking moisture out of fish back bones and eyes.

A couple whose boat was sunk by a whale survived on turtles and fish. The husband saw a turtle, reached over the side and lifted into the boat.

Re: Man Washes up in Marshall Islands 'After 16 Months Adrift'

I will be interested to hear his story. If it is true and it was me, I would have just about stopped arguing with myself after 16 months, though I would probably still be kicking myself for getting into such a situation.

Re: Man Washes up in Marshall Islands 'After 16 Months Adrift'

I'm skeptical. Without regular hydration we quickly die. That's a LOT of turtle blood to keep him from becoming so dehydrated that he couldn't function well enough to catch a turtle or even collect rainwater to drink. It stretches credulity to the breaking point to think he managed to get enough hydration to survive for 16 months from just turtles and rainfall.

I'd be interested in hearing counter-theories on how he ended up there? Or how long it would take. Anyone have a chart handy with currents and speed?
