Re: Man Washes up in Marshall Islands 'After 16 Months Adrift'

Some posters love their skeptic label so much that they ignore the facts and jump to their own conclusions and resent any critical appraisal of their own position. I've met religious people like that. Takes all types.....

Really? Show me the facts that you used to base your conclusion on these posters.

Simple explanation here Salty. "Facts" are statements that agree with your ideas. "Conclusions" are statements that do not. That is always the fact in my conclusion.

Re: Man Washes up in Marshall Islands 'After 16 Months Adrift'

I'm planning to "wash up" on the shores of Mexico.

When I was last there they got quite excited about my documentation,
which why I wondered if this guy in his Panga had a visa for the Marshalls . .

Mexico would not accept a printout of my boats registration certificate . . . only "an original" would do. I made the mistake of saying that it came off a database and no original existed . . . and after that I'd had it . . big time!

Nothing I could do or say would get them to accept my "printout" certificate. Stalemate ensued . . . I couldn't check out because I couldn't check in . . . so when I'm next in those parts . . . I'll just wash up on the shore somewhere.

If they can do it . . . so can I

Think of your favorite place on the ocean and then think of the worst weather you would see in a typical year at that spot and then try to imagine if anyone would be likely to survive in an open, 24' boat out there, keeping in mind that person would be badly fatigued and weakened and without equipment to steer or sail the boat or even change its orientation to the wind/waves.

You REALLY don't find it hard to believe?
say's a lot about the boat !

Not to my knowledge, but if it's funny, then yes.

Regarding the clean boat,

Assuming water was the limiting resource and the boat the largest catchment available, I'd keep it as clean as possible so that any rain water collected would not spoil. Clean turtle shells, yes, perhaps to shade the bilge and reduce evaporation.

I wish there were more pictures of the boat...

Well our castaway has finally revealed some of the detail of his ordeal:

Castaway Jose Alvarenga exclusively reveals his story | Mail Online

So, what I take from the DM article is that all sailors should carry a really big store of compressed/dried fiber products. Guess what was put in the article as one of the most health damaging effects of the voyage, and causing much agony? CONSTIPATION!

You need plenty of water to combat that as well, not just survival amounts.

Good story.

I just saw The Life of Pi. That was only 8 months.

As I recall, he had a fellow fisherman with him at the beginning of the ordeal. Surprisingly, the DM article didn't fixate on what happened to him.

There was a video that was supposed to have him discussing that, but I couldn't get it to play. Plus wondered what language it was in if I did.

That's because the above link is to part two of a two part article. Part one, where he discusses his companion and denies eating him, is here.
