Scurvy is a result of a lack of 'FRESH' food and the resultant minerals and vitamins... old time sailors got it because their diet at sea was invariably salt pork and hard tack..
Fresh fish and turtles would be adequate to hold scurvy at bay.

That didn't occur to me, but it does have an amazing amount of vitamins, minerals, possibly iron.

Not much kelp offshore except occasional rafts of dead stuff.. I think the fact that we was eating fresh, as in freshly caught, fish is the key. I don't think you need fruit and veg to ward off scurvy. Must be a doctor in the house?

Turtle liver. Most critters livers are loaded with vitamins. If you eat even a little polar bear liver, you will die from vitamin A poisoning.

This guy is a mexican fisherman, not an easy life. They are used to heading offshore with barely any supplies, constantly baked in the sun, with little water.Quite often when cruising off the coast they will pull alongside looking quite parched, asking for beer, pop,if none then juice, water as last option. When you say you have no cold Cokes, they look at you in disbelief.

I now realize that my "monkey sure jumps around a lot" comment probably didn't come across as the light-hearted jab that I intended, and therefore apologize.

That guy must have had somebody watching over him. If he had missed Ebon, he would have continued west with a lot more empty ocean. And, if he had hit the reef at the wrong tide and wave conditions he probably wouldn't be in one piece.
When I lived in the Marshalls, it used to amaze me to occasionally see the monster logs from the Pacific Northwest come floating by.

It may well be bunkum where his fishing boat has been put of another boat and transported. I dont know.

He may well have done it, but it appears rediculous and no one is interveiwing him in what may be a murder investigation.

You're very sceptical the older guy survived 13 months at sea but the young kid must have been murdered because he didn't survive 13 months???
I always thought you were very rational.

Man Washes up in Marshall Islands 'After 16 Months Adrift'

Health of castaway Jose Salvador Alvarenga deteriorates
The fisherman needed help walking and spoke in a low voice during a brief appearance. He is being treated for dehydration and doctors are concerned he may catch infections as a result of his first human contact in over a year.
